I drank at least one diet coke a day, but I could not stomach coffee the entire time I was pregnant. I will not give up caffeine completely for any pregnancy.
the studies they initially did with rats and coffee were very skewed. They essentially gave the rats so much coffee that they were ODing and that amount would have made any person be violently ill, and yes, those rat babies had alot of deformities etc
They did the study again with proportionate amounts of caffeine that a normal human would intake to the size of the rats, and there were no side effects or birth defects.
So coffee, in a healthy moderation is safe during pregnancy.
1st pregnancy- gave up until sometime during 3rd tri. Needed 1 small cup (itty bitty styrofoam) to jump start my day. 2nd pregnancy- I tried to give it up entirely, but hey, I have a 2 year old boy to keep up with. I just had 1 cup and tried to go without sometimes. Also, I checked and even the Starbucks drinks that I drink are only around 75 mg in the smallest size. And then, I chase it with water. Now during the 3rd tri., I'm not feeling as much of an effect from the caffeine. Those relaxing hormones must be working a little too well.
