When I see Clara I think of the little girl in the nutcracker, which I think is a great association to have.
I was going to say the same thing! I think of a sweet little girl dancing away It's your baby (and your DH's obvi), so go with what YOU want. Who cares what anyone else thinks.

It is beautiful. I agree with capulet - "variants of Clara and Isabelle are pretty popular these days"...it would really surprise me if family thought those were somehow unusual.
It's not like you're naming your kid Diarrhea! Your mom is being WAY over dramatic about it. People need to learn to keep their opinions to themselves if it is not their style. I agree it is old-fashioned and boring for MY taste, but what I think and what your family thinks does not matter. If you and your husband love it, go for it!
Clara Isabelle is beautiful! I love the name Clara so much I named my cat that when I was little. Unfortunately that means it is off the table for baby names

My mom and I have issues over names too. Fortunately she has no say in the matter.
Sometimes I think it's a generational thing. When she was naming babies the playgrounds and preschools were full of Jennifers, Melissas, Brians, and Jasons. She hasn't had to think that much about names since and I don't think her perception of what a good name is evolved with the times.
I think it's very pretty, not for me, but nice. I feel like the classic and old fashioned , that still feel fresh and modern (which I think this does) are the best names
- Married October 27, 2007 - TTC since June 2013 -
So I LOVE the name Clara Isabelle for a little girl, and my husband is also on board. But the few family member and friends I've mentioned it to, hate it. Complaints of it being 'ugly' and 'oldfashioned' and 'plain' and 'boring.'
Just wondering what other people's gut reactions to it are. I absolutely will not be offended if you hate it! My mother actually said 'I have never put my foot down with you on anything in your life but this will be the one time I will not let it go.'
Keep the name you like! From here on out if anyone asks, her name is Aquanetta Foshika Diamond Caramel... Last Name! Now that is an ugly, exciting, and makes people question your sanity.
Ummm... your family is overreacting big time! It's a lovely name!
That said, my mother did explain to me once that in her generation (Boomers) "Clara" was a cow, so that might explain the negative association (and reason why it wasn't popular for the children of Boomers). But guess what? They had their opportunities to name their kids, and now our generation just so happens to not have a negative association to this gorgeous, classic name. So they need to get over it.
I don't mind the name Clara. This is a reason why some people keep their names a secret. If I read your signature correctly, your 5-6 weeks pregnant? You might be set on a name now but it could change later on. I was set on a name at first and changed it about 3 times. Now we are definitely set on a name and we're not telling a soul!
I love Clara, and it was my choice for DD, now 7. I let people talk me out of it (saying it sounded like an old lady name and reminded them of Clarabelle cow), and it is one of my greatest regrets to give it up. This is your child, and YOU get to pick the name.
Clara is pretty much my favorite girl name, and the only reason we didn't use it is because it sounds bad with our last name. Your mom is being completely ridiculous.
You do realize that all "old lady' Claras were once children, right?
I love the name and I think its very pretty. Personally, I think Clara Isabella is a bit much with the double a endings, and would go for something simpler, i.e Clara Jane, but its a beautiful name.
Also, the Mom thing is exactly why we're not telling our name until the baby is born. It much harder to "hate on" an actual, existing person than an abstract idea.
All names technically are old fashioned, but Clara hasn't been a popular one for awhile! It is name like josh, Nathan, Christopher or Jessica, brittney, Stephanie that are old fashioned 1985 + names that when I hear people doing them still I feel sad! No offense to anyone (my brothers name is josh, my cousin is Nathan and best friend is stefani, great people that are all 21+ in age which is my point.... I consider this old) I don't actually think I know a single Clara whom is my age. I think it is a fresh name taken from an older time (like almost every name!) I also love Clara Isabelle it is so beautiful together and sounds like a name fit for a princess! Who cares if they don't like it! You and your DH agree so go for it!!
Once your DD is here and she falls in love with her, she won't hate anything about her. Not even the old fashioned name and eventually she will not be able to see little Clara as anything else
Totally funny because my DD is "Claire Isabella" Why in the world do people "hate" on this name? I loved it 6 years ago and I still do! Now the mn of Isabella is so popular sometimes I wish I maybe had chosen something else but Claire is so perfect and timeless...you cannot go wrong. I hear it out there but we don't personally know others. She is in a class of 26 kids and no others also..however, there are FIVE "Aiden's" in her class........
Without looking at what other people respond and giving you my gut instinct/thoughts on the name.......it's very pretty, I like it and it would be a great name on any little girl/woman. I'm a little suprised by your mom's negative reaction....it's not like you said Hilda Beatrice or something!!??

Love Clara, your mom sucks, and your baby = your decision.
Tell everyone else to shove it and stop discussing it with them.
