NBR: engagement party question

We just got an invite to DH's step sister's engagement party. I don't think I have ever been to one before. Are gifts expected? Will most people bring something anyway?

If it matters, DH is not close with her since they didn't grow up together. We will not be attending the wedding, which is across the country (not sure where the shower will be), but I planned to send a gift for that.

I've never been to an engagement party but I do think gifts are customary. Maybe just a bottle of champagne?

Yes, I would bring something. It doesn't have to be anything expensive. Maybe a nice frame or something?

Well, DH just said we aren't going, so I guess that settles that. He pointed out that it will only be his step sister's mom's side of the family because they are the only ones who live around here besides (randomly) us.

I had never even heard of one until KUWTK. I didn't know it was a thing.

However, isn't it kind of gift grabby? An engagement party...then a bridal shower a few months later...then a wedding? Three gifts for one couple in under a year?

I'm obviously alone on this.

Nope, you're not alone.  I agree.

Around here, it would be something like a bottle of wine or such.

Nope, you're not alone.  I agree.

Around here, it would be something like a bottle of wine or such.  

I also agree that it seems a little gift grabby. That's one of the reasons I wanted to check on the gift-giving consensus. Honestly, if we gave something at the engagement party, I probably wouldn't send a shower gift, since I probably won't attend. We'll send something for the wedding, for sure.
