Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Planning my puree making

So DD gets to start purees on October 1st (yay!) and I'm being super/overly organized and planning a feeding calendar.  Our pedi has us starting with yellow and orange veggies for the first 2 weeks, then any other veggies.  Fruits we can start Nov. 1st and proteins Dec. 1st.  I'm sure there's a method to his madness . . . Anyway, my question is: I know I should introduce one food at a time for 2-3 days each to make sure she doesn't have any allergic reactions, but at what point can I start giving her carrots for breakfast and spinach for dinner?  Is it only once both foods have been introduced for their 2-3 day tryout period?  I ask because looking at my calendar, I'm sure I'll make more than 3 days worth of carrot puree (planning to freeze in cubes) but I don't want to give them to her while we're trying out butternut squash or sweet potatoes for the first time if I shouldn't.  I may be overthinking this . . . help!

  • Typically you give one new food for 2 or 3 days.  After those days have passed without incident, you can move on to a new food or you can ADD a new food.  However, you starts solids slowly - only once a day and only a few tablespoons at first.  It'll likely be a while before you're adding a second meal.

  • Our pedi has us doing 1-2 oz (so one cube) 3 times a day - like breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Maybe because he has us starting right at 6 months?

  • I started my LO on purees at 5 months on the advice of the pedi since he is off the growth charts.  We started with fruits and veggies and once a food is introduced without reaction you can feed it along side any new foods, just don't introduce more than one at a time so if you get a reaction you will know it was most likely the new food.  I found that anything he didn't like I could mix with applesauce or yogurt(after 6 months) until he would eat it.  Yogurt is still one of his favorite foods.

This. We didn't move to a second meal with DS until like 7.5 months or so. Pedi just said he would be up to 3 by about 9 months.

Once they've tried something for a few days you can combine. For example my LO doesn't love green veggies on their own. The first time I gave her peas she gagged and made terrible faces at me, but then I mixed a scoop of the peas in with squash because it's something she likes and has already tried and she ate it no problem. I did this the very first night I gave her peas. As long as it's just one new thing, you're fine. The yellow/orange veggies are usually a hit because they're sweeter so if you start with them you'll be able to mix things with them later.

As for making your purees, you might not want to go too crazy at first. This time around I took someone's advice and bought jars of each food I wanted to introduce so I could make sure she liked it and reacted well to it before making a giant batch of it myself. My overthought organization is to buy jars of a new fruit and a new veggie each week, introduce the fruit on Sunday & veggie on Wednesday. If they're a hit, then the next week I buy the produce to make a batch of each to freeze. This has worked really well and I've been less stressed about it than I was the last time around.

  • Food before one is just for fun. The only reason for starting solids at this age is to get them to learn to eat, but the majority of their nutrients still need to be BM or F. So if they don't finish what you give them, don't put pressure on them or yourself
  • You introduce the new food in the meal rotation, and wait 2-3 days before adding ANOTHER  food.  DD has been on solids for about 4 weeks now, and so far we've introduced
    -avocado
    -peas
    -green beans
    -squash
    -sweet potatoes
    -carrots
    -corn
    -banana (as finger food)
    -cucumber (as a finger food)

she;s EH about the green beans, but that's because my puree was a little chunkier I think. she LOVES peas, sweet potatoes, carrots and squash. I tried a pouch with pear in it and she didn't dig it, so she doesn't seem too found of the super sweet fruit.

as far as amount, we've up to 6 "cubes" a day, 3x a day (so 2 "cubes" per meal). if we;re out i usually just give her half a pouch.  it's about 6 oz a day, and that keeps her at about 24-28 oz a formula day (so far if i've given her more food, she eats under 24 oz a formula so I make sure her formula intake doesn't dip below 24 oz).  in a couple weeks i might start giving her an extra oz during lunch and breakfast (those are the longest periods she goes between bottles).

i agree wit PP-with the exception of peas, i've given her a jar of every food i've introduced before giving it to her.   for the record, I don't mix the food i give her......
