I just got the Nikon D40 and love it. The pictures are so clear and quick- I'm not missing shots anymore! I had a Canon Rebel a while back, and I also use a Canon Elf. I think both are great, but after reading the reviews for SLRs, Nikon came out just a little ahead for the quality of pics.

I love photography and would recommend both Canon and Nikon. I personally use Nikon and I think the lenses are a bit sharper than Canon. However, I do think that Canon is more user friendly for people just beginning and it's faster to learn. Nikon takes a little more time but if you're willing to do it, I highly recommend it. I have the Nikon D70 and D50. To me, it's more about the quality of the lenses- spend your money on good, fast lenses.
Either way, you can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon.

I asked our pro photographer. She has a Nikon but says for someone just starting out, the Canons are great and a bit cheaper. So we went with a Canon XS and love it so far.
Thanks for the suggestions! I was leaning towards the Nikon, but am trying to do my research since it is an investment. I plan on taking a photography class so that I can learn all of the different features of the camera. I'm just not happy with my Sony digital camera. Takes forever to take a picture and by that time, Parker has moved on and the moment has passed. And the pictures are never as clear as I would like them to be. Grr...
We've got the Nikon D60, and we love it! It takes great shots and action shots without the fuzziness which is what we love because Ben never sits still.
