High-Risk Pregnancy

Fibroid tumors

I just had my 10 week ultrasound.  I have known all along that I have fibroid tumors.  My doctor said he wanted to keep watch on their growth so I had my first u/s at 7 weeks where they measured the fibroids.  At the 10 week u/s LO looks great and is progressing normally.  At this point the fibroids are not infringing on it's space.  I have 8 fibroids with the smallest measuring 3cm and the two largest are 6cm and 7cm with all others being somewhere in between.  What I was wondering is if anyone else has had experience with a pregnancy with large fibroids? How do you feel your pregnancy differed from a non-fibroid pregnancy?  Any sugeestions you might have for someone in this situation?

Re: Fibroid tumors

  • My situation was a little different, but hopefully my experience will be helpful.  I only had 1 fibroid.  But it was 18cm, so it was a monster (we dubbed it the evil twin).  I was in a lot of pain, especially when I moved.  I was on light duty at 12 weeks and bedrest from 22 weeks until delivery.  Most women with fibroids do not experience anything like that, so that is not any kind of sign that you will be stuck on bedrest or have intense pain.  My fibroid was not on the inside of my uterus, so it did not impact room for the baby, but I did get very large during my pregnancy.  The scariest time was towards the end when the doctors were concerned that the fibroid and the baby were competing for blood supply.  If ever DD showed signs of slowed/stopped growth than we would go immediately for delivery.  Thankfully, DD took what she needed and the fibroid had to survive on what was left over.  I delivered via C-section at 39 weeks to a perfectly healthy, wonderful little girl.  I had surgery 3 months later to remove the fibroid.  DD is now 14 months and I am 16 weeks pregnant with #2.  So far I have had no problems with this pregnancy and they are not expecting me to have any of the complications I did last time.

Fibroids suck.  I hope things go smoothly during your pregnancy.  We all want healthy, safe pregnancies, and it is scary when you hear any kind of news that isn't an optimal situation.  Trust in your doctors to provide you with good care (and if you don't trust your doctor - switch immediately!).  I hope all goes well for you!

  • Thank you for sharing your story.  Wow that was a large fibroid!  My Doctor told us early on to be prepared, that bedrest is a possibility and we should prepare for it just in case.  I have to say that I am lucky and my doctor is a bit of a rockstar where this type of care is concerned.  I trust him completely :)  I am glad that your little one got what she needed and was healthy.

Thank you for your well wishes and good luck with your second LO.  I hope the pregnancy continues to be smooth sailing :)

  • I have 7 fibroids. When I was pregnant with my son, they grew significantly. Two were over 8cm and the rest were 3-4cm. My doctor said all together they were the size of his head! And I was huge!!! I had 3 or 4 what I called "episodes" that lasted for about 5 days each - of severe pain throughout my pregnancy that was honestly more painful than labor. I ended up having my son 6 weeks premature. I had him vaginally so they were not in the way. The doctors aren't sure why I went early, but the fibroids are a likely cause. My labor was literally only 2 hours long. I pushed twice and he came out! He spent 3 weeks in the NICU but youd never know it now (he is 14 months) Now I am 22 weeks pregnant with #2 and I have had no pain yet Yaye!! I am getting weekly injections to help prevent against per term labor. The fibroids have also not grown this time. So, point being, every pregnancy is different, you may have no issues. Best of luck!
  • Thank you ladies for the information.  It makes me feel better.  I have been having some pain and last night had some bleeding issues.  Ultrasound today shows a baby with a strong heartbeat and measuring perfectly.  I am on bedrest until I see the doctor on Tuesday.   They believe the pain and bleeding are from the fibroids.  One is degenerating so they said that may be the cause.  I am hoping it will pass and I will be able to work normally.  We are not prepared for me to be off work a lot. (but then again who is ever really prepared for that)

  • I have 3 fibroids with more appearing at each ultrasound. During the first 13 weeks mine doubled in size but have since shown minimal growth. I also had lots of bleeding episodes likely contributed to the fibroids. Knock on wood I haven't had any unexplained bleeding since! And each time there was bleeding, the ultrasound showed a perfect baby with a strong heartbeat. All of my fibroids are at the bottom of the uterus so I am likely looking at a c-section delivery. I was put on pelvic rest and limited bed rest for 2 weeks during one of the bleeding episodes but have since returned to work at my normal schedule. Best of luck!
