High-Risk Pregnancy

Any High Risk Mamas allowed to VBAC?

I had severe pre-e and LO developed IUGR.  We had to do a C-section due to heart rate decels not coming back up.  I know I will be considered high risk with #2 and need to see an mfm due to the issues with #1.  I am very early with #2 and have not yet been to the OB.  Obviously, I will discuss with him when I go, but will they even let you VBAC if you are considered high risk?  Anyone have experience with this?  I am guessing  it somewhat depends on whether the pre-e and IUGR manifests itself again, but I have also thought that they may just say no regardless because so many doctors seem to want everything to be completely perfect before they will allow a vbac.

Re: Any High Risk Mamas allowed to VBAC?

  • I guess it depends on the situation. My doctor already told me he would be doing a C-section and recommended I tie my tubes. I had pre-e and partial placenta abruption. The thought of trying vbac though and chancing ripping the previous c-section is scary but who knows how much that actually happens.

  • I was high risk due to MTHFR and previous blood clots, plus DS was borderline IUGR and I had low fluid. I planned to VBAC through my entire pregnancy. In the end, we decided to do a RCS because of a completely unrelated issue with DD. but you can certainly VBAC with a high risk pregnancy. My MFM doctors were super supportive of it. Just depends on the situation. Discuss it with your OB and educate yourself as much as possible!

  • Pre-e and IUGR with #1 that led to c-sect, midwives said no problem to aiming for vabc for #2.

No signs of IUGR nor pre-e with this pregnancy, so far.

  • Oh and the increase risk of uterine rupture for a VBAC as PP mentioned, is about 0.5%. Very uncommon. Please, please do your research and know your options. That will help you decide what's best for you.

  • I had pre-e with #1 and also had to have an emergency c section at 35 weeks due to heart decels and my son not moving. (He's perfectly healthy now BTW) I'm also a type 1 diabetic so I have been considered high risk from the beginning.

I got pregnant with #2 fairly quickly. My kids will be 16 months apart and I was again considered high risk due to the pre-e and my type 1 diabetes. I had to have weekly progesterone injections and was put on an aspirin regimine. I'm currently 37 weeks with no signs of pre-e scheduled to be induced at 39 weeks. I have a few different doctors and all are supportive of a VBAC except one, but hospital nurses have told me he's notorious for pushing c sections.

So even though I had pre-e, I'm diabetic and got pregnant again so quick my doctors are still supportive of a VBAC. I hope I can do it!! Good luck :-)
  • Good info I obviously haven't the slightest!

  • Thanks everyone!  And I love hearing of all of the ladies who had pre-e with number 1 and didn't with number 2. I am already very nervous about getting pre-e again.
