Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Jelousy - normal?

DS is 14 months and goes to DC and is used to playing with other children.  On Saturday, we had a few little kids over for a play date.  One of the little boys sat in my lap.  Upon seeing that, DS quickly crawled across the room to where we were, started hitting the other kid and tried to push him off, and then started crying when the other little kid didn't move.  I eventually moved the other kid away, then DS spent the next hour either sitting in my lap or sitting right next to me and as soon as he saw another child moving close to me, he'd climb back into my lap again.  I tried walking away but he screamed every time I did that.  We go to a music class Sunday mornings and normally DS would sit happily in the circle by himself.  But on Sunday he once again didn't leave my lap.  He was fine once we were on our own and there were no other kids around.

I'm a FTM so I don't know if this is normal??

Re: Jelousy - normal?

  • I am not a child psychologist, but I would say normal.  Kids do not learn how to share until they are much older, 5+.  Your son's behaviors may be more that he doesn't want to share you with the other kids rather than he is jealous.

Here is a short article from Dr. Sear's about sharing behaviors.  I also like this "Toddler's Rules of Possession" for a tongue-in-cheek laugh about kids and sharing.

  • Normal.  I was holding C's baby cousins a couple weeks ago and she flipped.  I ended up sitting on the couch with her standing on the couch leaning over so she could grab me around the neck and look accusingly down at the baby, and I held the baby with my other arm.

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • DD used to flip when I held other kids then DS came and now she could care less.  I'd say it's normal.  They are possessive!

  • DD gets jealous if I try to pet our dog, I can only imagine how upset she would be if I tried to hold another child!
