Running/Working Out Thread

Hey May 2014 Mamas~

I wanted to start a post (didn't think I saw one) for those who regularly exercise or are beginning an exercise plan (in whatever capacity) where we can talk about what we did this week, how far into pregnancies we are, worries and concerns, and how are bodies are changing. Maybe we can make this a once a week post on Mondays?

I'll start with an introduction: I'm 28 and live in the DC area. Before getting pregnant, I hit the gym about 5x a week. Three of those days were dedicated to cardio classes like kickboxing and the other two days were strength-training classes. I also love to run and usually run once or twice a week (if not training for a race) anywhere from 2-5 miles. I got my BFP last week on 9/10 and was scared to death to work out. When I scheduled my first OBYN appointment, I asked the nurse about working out. She said if you've been exercising, continue to do it, but listen to your body and don't push yourself like you normally would have done. I finally went out and did a run yesterday and felt amazing!

How far along: By ovulation date, 4 weeks/4 days & by last AF date, 5 weeks/4 days

Last Week's Log: Sadly only one entry:
9/15: Four mile run

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: Like I said earlier, I was petrified to run, but I felt amazing during/after my run. I ran a 45 second slower pace per mile than I usually do, but I could talk easily throughout my entire run. I didn't feel any different than I did pre-pregnancy.

Plans for this Week:
Today: 1 hour strength-training class (with small weights)
Tuesday: Either 3-4 mile run or other cardio class
Wednesday: 1 hour strength-training class
Thursday: Break
Friday: 1 hour cardio class
Saturday: 1 hour cardio class
Sunday: 3-4 mile run

I'd love to hear from other expecting moms and get to know you all. What are you hot mamas-to-be doing this week?

Re: Running/Working Out Thread

  • Great idea, I don't believe anyone has started a workout thread yet. I'm 31 and expecting #1. I was supposed to run a half-marathon August 31st but did cancel that since we had extreme heat here that day. Otherwise I haven't changed my training at all. I'm a runner and swimmer so I imagine once I get towards the end I'll probably swim more and run less once I start getting uncomfortable. I take a weight training class at the gym 2-3 times a week to stay toned.

How far along: 7 weeks, 2 days

    Last Week's Log: 3 1-hour strength training classes, 2 5-mile runs, 1 3-mile run

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: I've been really lucky so far, I have barely been sick at all so have been able to keep up my same workout schedule.

    Plans for this Week:
Today: 1 hour strength-training class (with small weights)
    Tuesday: 5 mile run
    Wednesday: 5 mile run
    Thursday: 1 hour strength-training class
    Friday: Rest
    Saturday: 6 mile run
    Sunday: Swim workout

  • @Miggg - smart move on forgoing the half last month. Any other races coming up for you? I have a 10K scheduled for the last weekend in October. If doctor gives me the okay, I plan on running that.

  • @jcrewgirl85 great idea! I think it would be great to be able to see how other mommas-to-be are Doug with exercise.

introduction: I'm 29 and live in WV. Before getting pregnant, I ran 4x a week, running 4-8 miles each time. I was training for the MCM 10k in DC at the end of October. The day I got my BFP, I ran a Color Me Rad 5k. 2 days later I started spotting and went to the dr. Since I am spotting and have never spotted with my other 3 pregnancies, I am not allowed to run until the spotting stops. Still waiting for that to happen. Also, I am studying to be a group fitness instructor at a local gym. I am supposed to start teaching classes at the beginning of October but may not be allowed to since I have been restricted to no exercise :(

    How far along: 6w 2d

Last Week's Log: sadly none. All I want to do is run.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: Feeling like I am slowing gaining weight since I haven't been able to work out. If they do approve exercise I'm worried they won't approve my training for the 10k.

Plans for this Week: going to the dr for a u/s and follow up with dr. Praying they allow me to start running again. Even 1 mile a day for excite me!
  • @MKMomma - hey there, the 10K that I mentioned is the MCM - I'm running it too! I hope you get clearance and are able to run/walk it! Just curious - could the spotting have been from anything else besides the 5K you did?

  • Awesome! I was sure I was going to get AF on the day of my 5k, and since I was dressed in all white, & didn't want to have a huge red spot of my white shorts, I used a tampon for "just in case AF shows up." Dr thought that could have caused it but it hasn't stopped. :( There doesn't seem to be any other reason for the spotting. Praying they clear me today. I'm dying to run again!
  • Intro:  Prior to ttc/ART when I was on the pill, I was in really good shape.  I even did fitness/swimsuit competitions. I was 5'8 and my competition weight was about 127-130. (Legitimately, this was very thin. I was about a size 2 at this weight...and I'm tall.)  My everyday weight was more about 140-145.  However, then between fertility meds (clomid and progesterone supplementation packed it on me), screwed up hormones and life, I was up to about 160-165 by the time I got pregnant.  Still, for my height, this wasn't an unhealthy weight.  But I packed it on with pregnancy.  I had horrible m/s with number 1, but didn't lose weight from it. Instead, I found the only way to control it was to eat almost constantly and eat a lot of breads/sugars.  Then I developed pre-e (and my LO IUGR) and was put on bed rest and a very high calorie diet.  I ended up being 224 by the time I delivered. Over the past year, I have worked my behind off to lose 50 lbs. (As an aside, whoever said the weight just falls off after pregnancy is a BIG, FAT LIAR!!!  I think it was even harder to lose weight...for me especially because I had a tough recovery from a C-section.)  My goal now is to try to limit my weight gain in this pregnancy, stay active and really try to be as healthy as possible.

How far along:  4 weeks 5 days.

Last week's log:  I think I did some form of exercise 5 out of 7 days last week.  I did zumba twice, a yoga class yesterday and then did weights and light cardio the other days.  I have been trying to stay active, but just doing things at a lower intensity than normal.

Feelings/Rants/Worries/Concerns:  I am really unclear on how many calories to eat. In fact, I may make a separate post about this. A lot of what I read says 2200 calories per week for first tri, but this seems excessive.  I have been doing this weight loss thing long enough (and have enough independent knowledge about my own body) to know that to average about a pound of weight loss a week, I can only eat about 1200 calories per day (with a little more added back in if I work out).  I can really only eat about 1600-1800 to maintain.  Any more than that and I start gaining.  So the 2200 just seems excessive and like it will resort in me putting on 10 pounds just in my first trimester--which I can't even see as being healthy.  Anyone have any thoughts?

Plans for this week:  I'm working out with a personal trainer at 5 today (hopefully) and then plan to aim to continue what I am doing.  I hope I continue to feel good. Last time, I really started feeling icky about 7-8 weeks. I am hoping that doesn't happen again. But, if it does, I at least want to try to keep up my current routine until then.

  • Great idea!

I'm 30 and have been working out religiously since I was 18. I took about 3 weeks off when I had my son last October, but that's the longest I've gone. I've done Insanity, P90x and X2. I run (not long distances 3-5 miles usually) and focus on srength training, as my body responds well to that (weight wise - not ripped-wise!).

    How far along: 5w2d

Last Week's Log: I worked out 4 times doing upper body, lower body, ab work and cardio. I'm definitely taking it easy, though.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: I've been crampy the past couple of days, so yesterday I did a prenatal workout dvd. I felt good afterward and am even sore today! Still crampy today, though :-/

    Plans for this Week:
5am workouts planned for Tues, Wed, Thurs, and one weekend workout.

Gonna paraphrase cuz I'm actually on a stair master right now. Im 25 and live in CA. I Start off everyday with thirty minutes of cardio and either arms and legs or abs, then three days a week after work I get a 30 minute swim in. So far it's helped my nausea and I haven't cut back and don't plan to. That's during the work week.

During the weekends I run two 5 mile runs on a running path across the street from my house with my jogging stroller and 25 pound 13 month old and my goldendoodle Chester. I did this last pregnancy and only gained 25 pounds and had a 9 pound one ounce baby. So I think my workout plan was great and I am looking forward to doing the same again.

  • @lBackBevo - congrats on dropping those 50 lbs. This is my first pregnancy, so I imagine losing weight is difficult and takes hard work - not magic like Hollywood makes it look. You should be proud of yourself. As for calorie intake, I'm not expert, but I don't think I'm consuming the 2200 either - I eat when I'm hungry and opt for healthy foods (fruit/veggies, etc.) although I definitely had a pumpkin doughnut this weekend and it was delicious! Before getting KU, I was 136 - I haven't weighed myself yet, but I'm hoping I haven't gained anything yet since I just found out last week. To be sure, I'd maybe consult a nutritionist who specializes with pregnant clients? Perhaps your OB can make a recommendation?

@MinaE01 - how did you like Insanity? I've always wanted to try that (obviously I won't start now), but was thinking about doing that post-baby.

  • @ibackbevo hey there! I thought it was only 200 more calories a day you need to consume, or is that for when you're breast feeding? I'm concerned about weight gain as well. I have gotten into the best shape I have been after 3 kids and don't want to have to start completely over.
  • @Jcrewgirl85, Insanity is HARD! It will whip you into excellent cardio shape. I didn't lose very much weight, though. My body responds better to P90x and weightlifting, I've found.

  • This is a great idea!

introduction: I'm 26 and live in the Boston area. This will be our first baby.  I had some spotting a week or so ago, so I was not able to work out until Wednesday of last week after a great U/S.  Prior to being pregnant, I was a big exerciser - usually doing 2 hours or more of exercise 6 days per week.  I've had to slow down a little bit, but so far so good!

    How far along: 6w2d
Last Week's Log: Wednesday (9/11): Muscle conditioning & spin; Thursday (9/12): cardio kickboxing; Saturday (9/14): spin & cardio kickboxing
Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: I've really limited my "jumping" in my more intense activities, as it makes me nervous due to previous spotting.  Other than that, I just find myself needing more water breaks and feeling a bit slower than usual.  This constant nausea isn't really helping to motivate me either.
Plans for this Week: (depending on how nauseous I am...)
Today: 1 hr personal training & 1 hr cardio kickboxing
    Tuesday: cardio kickboxing
    Wednesday: muscle conditioning & spin
Thursday: cardio kickboxing or TRX class
    Friday: cardio kickboxing
    Saturday: spin & cardio kb

  • @Jcrew - Thanks for the suggestion on the nutritionist. I will look into that.

@MKMomma - I have read different things in different places. Some places say 200 calories extra day.  Some say 2200. I think I even read one that was like 2300.  I just sort of took an average.  Honestly, though, I am so early (not even 5 weeks) and the baby is so small at this point, I can't even see where I would need any extra calories considering I have ample fat reserves-lol.  Definitely something I plan to bring up when I go in to see the doctor.

  • Hi! I'm so glad there's an exercise thread! I just got my BFP yesterday and I'm guessing I'm about 4wks along according to when I ovulated. This is my first time and I'm not telling most people until the 12wk mark. I was afraid to run too but I keep reading about how exercise is better than not doing anything. I have a doc appointment tomorrow (it was supposed to be a preconception visit but we ended up conceiving our first month trying) so ill ask her about it then. I was actually a month away from finishing marathon training but I think I'll save the marathon for another year. I have a half marathon next month, too but I think I'll switch it to a 10k if the doc says its ok. I've never been a very good runner and get winded easily so I'm hoping I don't have too much trouble during pregnancy. I really want to stay fit! I did notice my running bra kind of hurts (my ladies don't like being smashed in apparently). Any recommendations on pregnancy approved running bras for C/D cups?
  • Can I join? I'm not super fit like some of you ladies, but the "Healthy while TTC" and "Born to Run TTC" were some of my favorite threads on TTGP!

    introduction
: I'm 29 and live in PA. I swam in high school, and it was my New Year's Resolution in 2012 to run a 1/2 marathon before the year was out. I completed my goal in October 2012 with a time of 2:14:16. (not very fast, I know, but I was super proud. My DH and I are very outdoorsy and love hiking. In the last 3 years, we have really gotten into trail running. It is really popular in our area, and we run a couple races a year, ranging from 10ks to 40 miles! (the 40 miler was more of a hike, though). My races consist more of hiking the uphills and jogging the downhills and flats, but some really awesome people can run the whole thing!

How far along: 5 weeks today--no symptoms, either, but that's a whole other post.

Last Week's Log: not too much for last week, I did 1 hour-long hike and 2 walking/jogging treadmill workouts. I was worried about doing too much before talking to the OB nurse.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: I was scheduled for a 1/2 marathon trail run yesterday. DH and some of our friends did it as well. After talking with the OB nurse, she recommended I not do it, because I hadn't been training as much as I should have. Also, she told me I couldn't get fatigued or dehydrated, which pretty much eliminates serious trail running (at least for me, lol) She also didn't like the fall risk on some of the steep single track in our area.

    Plans for this Week:
Workout Mon, Tues, and Friday at the YMCA during my lunch hour. I've got a custody trial Wed. and Thurs. (I'm an attorney) so sadly, no workouts then. Hopefully some nice hikes with the hubs and pup this weekend.

  • @kramja01 - I remember you from the TTGP board! Huge kuddos to you for doing trail runs. Those are not my thing! I am super clumsy so I could never do that, plus my ankles/knees don't handle those as well. I haven't had any symptoms since last week - I felt nauseous a few days last week, but I have to keep telling myself I'm very early into this - 4 weeks/4 days. Maybe we'll just be those lucky ladies who never get any?

@Carabiner252 - nice job on those halfs/fulls. I did my first/only full in 2010 (MCM in DC) and have done two other halfs. The last one was in April for the Nike Women's Half in DC. I hope you get over the nausea soon and can start running again!

@BeanQueen83 - We don't plan on telling anyone until we're past the 12 week mark as well. Unfortunately I have rather small boobs, so I have no suggestions on the comfy bra thing. If I had my way, I'd be bra-less at all times. lol.

  • Intro: I live in southern nh and I am 26. I have always been active through sports then when I stopped playing after college I took up running. I try and run 2-3 times a week (through its hard working full time and a baby). I was able to run through 37 weeks with my first and then was back out there 3 weeks later. I did gain way more then I wanted and took about 7 months to get it off. Now my plan is to run and do t25 which I have been doing for 2 months.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: Just been really crampy so I don't want to over push it

Plans for this week: mon-run and t25, wed, thurs, fri, sat, sun t25 and maybe some walks in there too.

  • Intro: Hi I'm 32 from NYC and this will be DH & my first baby. I have been working out for over 10+ years consistently 3-4 times a week. In addition to running I also bike, snowboard and golf. I qualified for the NYC marathon this year, but alas will not be able to run it now that I am expecting.

    How far along: 6w7d

Last Week's Log: Last week was a pretty easy week. Worked out 4 days, ran/elliptical 3 and did a barre class. I did also golf, but that's not definitely not very active, especially when you're riding in a cart.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: My breasts have started becoming really sore this week and when I run, it hurts pretty bad. I've been also taking classes with friends that require trampolines and hi impact heart racing cardio sequences, but now have to forego those and come up with a good excuse as to why I cannot go.  I'm also in a co-ed dodgeball league and had to quit my team of 5 years and they are all speculating something is up.

Plans for this Week: I'm going to try and do my 3-4 runs a week and throw in some classes in.

  • I love this idea! I was on the Born to Run thread on the TTC board, and this is a great thread to have here as well.

Introduction: I am 28 and I live in the Mid-Michigan area. I have always been active as a kid, but eventually I found myself morbidly obese and almost 4 years ago I had a WLS surgery to help me lose weight.  I was able to lose 140 pounds and have kept it off since by becoming super active. I run, bike and swim -- when I can get my butt out of the pool in the evenings. I got my BFP on 9/7 and I have kept working out ever since.  I just make sure I take walk breaks, drinks tons and tons of water, and do not push myself as hard as I normally do.  I am currently training for my second marathon, which Baby R and I will run together on December 1st in FL.

How Far Along: 4w6d based on my last period date.

Last Week's Log: Wednesday: 4 Miles, Thursday: 20 Mile Bike Ride, Friday: 3 Miles, Sunday: 3 Miles. I was supposed to run 7 on Sunday but I was so tired after 3 I stopped.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: Nothing pregnancy related. I have some how managed to find the energy needed to at least get out there and run. I am struggling with my IT Band in my right leg and I've been working on it since July. It has really hurt my speed and my distance since I am trying to keep it from flaring up. The furthest I have been able to go without it really bothering me is 7-8 miles.  I am supposed to run a half marathon in two weeks and I have till Friday to decide if I am going to keep the half and walk/run it -- pushing myself -- or if I am going to default to the 10k race.

Plans for this week: Wednesday: 3 Miles, Thursday: 6 Miles, Friday: Bike 25+, Sunday: 10 Miles

@Jcrewgirl85 -- My first marathon was the MCM in 2011. My Dad ran in 2011 with me and has ran it every year since then.  He's going for the 5 year pin. That is an awesome marathon to run, specially for your first. I loved it!

  • Intro: Hello. I'm Kara and I'm 26 living in Iowa. I am definitely not as into fitness as a lot you amazing ladies, but I do enjoy exercising and accountability is always a plus if you ask me :) This will be mine and DH's first baby. I grew up dancing on a competitive dance team, and in college continued dancing, but also got into running. In grad school I trained for half marathons with my friends, but we were too poor to actually enter them :) We ran them together for fun though. Recently, I've been running short distances (1-4 miles), biking, walking, and playing lots of games (dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, etc) with my husband's youth group.

    How far along: 6w4d

    Last Week's Log:
Mon: 1 mile walk/jog with dog
    Tues: 2 mile trail walk/jog
    Wed: nothing :(
    Thurs: 1.5 mile trail walk/jog
Friday: 1 mile walk with DH and dog
    Saturday: nothing :(
Sunday: 1 hour of ultimate frisbee/dodgeball

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: Extremely tired lately, I take a nap almost everyday which is unlike me, but I am overwhelmed with tiredness. My mom told me to take those naps if possible. My tailbone has an old injury and it started hurting this week, not sure if it is a random injury or if it is hurting because stuff is moving around down in there...hope it goes away because it is quite painful. Can't wait to go to doctor next Monday to find out. Also, randomly crampy/strange feeling (perhaps light "morning" sickness??)

Plans for this Week: Trying to get running/jogging worked more into my workout schedule with less walking. Probably also need to add in some strength!!!

  • Intro: Hi Im 27 from CA and have been a runner all my life. I usually run 3-4 times per week, but had signed up for a half marathon on Sept 22 so I had started doing more. As soon as I found out I was expecting, I panicked and stopped my training. I spoke with my dr and he said I should be ok, but I'm still very cautious. I've skipped a couple runs, and have been taking my long runs a lot easier.

    How far along: 7w2d

Last Week's Log: Pretty mellow week. Ran 4 on Monday, 3 on Wed, and 4 on Thursday. I skipped my 8 miler on Sat :(

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: I hate to admit it, because I THRILLED to be expecting, but I really wanted to PR on this race. I'm sad I won't be able to go hard, but just glad I can run at all. I'm nervous that I will get competitive and push too hard. I get scared when I feel crampy, so if it happens when I'm raving, I'm not sure what I will do.

Plans for this Week: doing 3 miles tonight, 3 on Wed and 2 on Friday. Then my race on Sunday!

Plans for this Week: Walk tonight, tomorrow, rest Wednesday, play volleyball Thursday, walk Friday.

  • I usually work out on the elliptical daily, but ours is in the midst of a repair right now.  I was all gung-ho to start the Jillian Michael's 30 day shred, but after doing it one night after my BFP, I realized it might not be best to start while pregnant.  Until the elliptical is repaired I will be doing the Erin O'Brien Prenatal Fitness Fix.  It is the only prenatal workout I found with reviews that say it is actually a workout.

I'm hoping I don't have restrictions this time.  I wasn't allowed to exercise for 8 weeks last time due to a subchorionic hematoma and a low lying placenta, both of which resolved themselves.  Pregnancy is the one time where working out helps me feel immensely better in terms of energy.

  • Intro: Hi!  This is my second pregnancy.  I gained 35lbs last time, which isn't terrible, but I was a bum the entire 9 months.  I also learned that the weight doesn't "fall right off when you BF" like I was told it would.  I'm not as in to fitness as a lot of you, but I do enjoy working out and have lost 15lbs over the last year, and am actually 10lbs under my pre-pg weight from my first pg.  I do a variety of stuff, Jillian's 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30, some Insanity and Turbofire, and this summer I did a lot of roller blading with the jogging stroller.

    How far along: 6w

Last Week's Log: nada, I had a ton of nausea and I tried a few different mornings to do things and almost puked.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: Doing too much.  Those days I have felt well enough to workout, I don't feel like my body is even telling to slow down at all.  I still try and do the modified versions of some exercises because I feel like I should be.

Plans for this Week: Try and get a Jillian or Turbofire work out in every morning.  Rollerblade on Saturday if the bike path isn't wet.

  • introduction: Hi! I'm 33 and live in Minneapolis, MN. This will be our first! My husband and I are both former athletes, and training is something we do quite often together. So I typically work out for 1-2 hours 6x/week. I've cut back a bit since my BFP, but not a lot. Just listening to my body and not pushing or slowing down when I need to.

    How far along: 5w2d
    Last Week's Log
Tue-Sunday: 45 min cardio, 30-45 min strength training
Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: This sound selfish, but I'm worried about gaining too much weight, or not enough. I just want to carry and do everything as close to perfect as possible.
Plans for this Week: (depending on how nauseous I am...)
Today: 30 min cardio, 30 min strength
Tuesday: 1 hour personal training, 30 min cardio
    Wednesday: break
Thursday: 1 hour personal training, 30 min cardio
Friday: 30 min cardio, 30 min strength
    Saturday: 45-60 min cardio, abs
    Sunday: 45-60 min cardio, abs

  • Intro: Hi ladies! I am so proud of all of you for trying to work out and stay as healthy as possible during your pregnancy! I am 32 and live in Florida. This will be my third baby but 5th pregnacy. During each one of my pregnancies I have tried to continue with my workout plan but have never succeeded. With my first two boys I got really dizzy during any workout beyond walking. My last pregnancy (mc at 10 weeks in May) I was determined and continued on my 4-5x week strength training and running with just more breaks than usual. However right after a workout I started spotting and ended up losing the baby. I know that it was probably pure coincidence but now I am scared to exercise.

How far along: 6weeks 5 days

Last weeks long: nothing ) :

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: I went back to the gym this am to try to get over my fears. I did 30 minutes of arms/chest/back and then ran for two .5 intervals with a walking rest in between. When I got home I had some very light brown spotting. / : prior to getting pregnant in April I worked really hard to get all my previous baby weight off and was down to a weight I have seen since college. I'm just hoping that I can keep my weight gain at a reasonable pace this time (I gained 40 lbs each time with my healthy pregnancies)

Plans for this week: mon strength and cardio; Thursday strength & cardio walking in between days.
  • I just want to start by saying that I'm so impressed with you ladies!! I'm not as serious about working out during the school year because I get very busy with my job and work kind of far from home. So, I only workout on weekends.

Intro: This is my first pregnancy, and I'm so thrilled! I've done 1 half marathon, a few 10ks and many 5ks. I also did a sprint triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run) last year and again this year a couple weeks before I got my BFP! I've always been a runner but just learned to front crawl swim last summer and really started enjoying swimming this year.

    How far along: 6w1d

    Last Week's Log: Sun - swam 1/2 mile, Sat - ran 5k

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: It's been difficult to hold back while running. I usually like to push myself, and I know I shouldn't do that while pregnant.

Plans for this Week: Same as last week--swimming and running only 1 day each

Also, I just wanted to share about GymPact... I don't work for them or anything, but I love it. If you haven't already heard about or use it, you may want to look it up. It definitely keeps me accountable when I'm not training for something. And I really like the Run Keeper app that you have to use with it to track outdoor activities.
  • @Miggg - smart move on forgoing the half last month. Any other races coming up for you? I have a 10K scheduled for the last weekend in October. If doctor gives me the okay, I plan on running that.

@Jcrewgirl85 - Nope, no other races on the schedule. Thinking I'll sign up for a half or full post-baby though to give myself some motivation to get back in fighting shape. :) Good luck on your 10K!
  • @MMason12 are you scheduled for the Disney marathon?

At my u/s today they saw I have a subchorionic hemorrhage which explains the spotting. My doctor said I am allowed to walk but nothing more until my next appointment in 2 weeks. Happy I can walk at least but I'm itching to run!

All of you ladies make me want to run 1/2 & full marathons too!!
  • My names Erika I live in Deep South ga due to my husbands duty stationed. This is going to be our second out 1st my dear boy turns 3 this weekend. I started working out after my son after extra weight gain from my son, and lost 40lbs pre preg I was 135 after eating clean, and running with my munchkin I dropped down to 108 and finally got up to 111 :). I plan to run with baby #2 for as long as he or she lets me. Normally in the fall/winter/spring months I'm running 8 min miles however I've been SLACKING!!! Only doing about 9 min miles :((. Hopefully once it starts cooling I can get that min back and add another mile :)

    How far along: 6 weeks

Last Week's Log: 3 2 mile runs, 2 days of calisthenics at home.

Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: Normally I'm running 3 miles a day 3-5 days a week, but due to the heat still here in the south I'm paranoid about over heating and hurting the baby.

Plans for this Week: 2 mile runs when I can and when my 3 year old lets me, and calisthenics.

  • Hello all--

This is our second pregnancy and because the first was a breeze with zero complications (with the exception of too much weight gained) I feel as though I may have pushed myself a little too hard this time around...

I am about 8 weeks along and ran my first half marathon on Sunday---my doctor said I could but I still feel I may of pushed myself too hard...of course in sore but I've been cramping and having hot flashes since the race...calling the doctor today-though I'm hoping its just normal "stretching" and cramping...

Anyone else experience anything like this?
  • @brittanysommar - congrats on your first half! My advice - if your doctor said you could do it and you did it and you felt good while doing it, then you did the right thing. This is my first pregnancy, but everything that I've been reading has said cramping is fine as long as they aren't painful 'stabbing' cramps. Call the doctor just to be safe, but maybe take it easy today and tomorrow.

  • Great idea!  Maybe this thread will help me stay motivated!

introduction: I'm 26 and live in Northern VA . Before getting pregnant with DD, hubs and I were training for the Army 10 miler - so we were running 5-6 days a week and going to Krav Maga classes at least once or twice a week. At just under 2 months pregnant, I successfully completed the 10 miles in just under 2hrs, which was a little slower than I wanted, but I knew I was pregnant and was afraid to push myself too hard. So I ran the first 5miles and then alternated btwn jogging and walking the last 5.  After that, I got REALLY REALLY exhausted in my first trimester, so I lost all motivation to stay active. It wasn't until the second tri that I had some energy back to do some walking and yoga.

This go around, with a toddler and working full time, DH and I are again struggling to stay motivated... we have a jogging stroller and some 10-minute trainer DVDs that we are hoping to get some use out of. I just hope I don't lose all my energy again!

Last Week's Log: Sadly only one entry:
We took DD and the dog for a jog on Saturday morning, didn't make it far before letting DD play on a nearby playground. We did some dips and pushups on the bench before jogging the rest of the way home. Only went about a mile :-\
Feelings/Rants/Worries and Concerns: I wish I could stay motivated to work out. DH and I are bad at motivating each other - if one of us is feeling lazy, the other follows... and it's frustrating when I try to hint at working out or go do some pushups or squats or something and DH is just browsing the internet and won't join in.  And he's got a tough mudder race next month! I keep telling him he "should really start training" and he does nothing. ugh! (sorry, rant over) So hopefully you fit and active ladies will keep me honest!

    Plans for this Week:
I'm working from home today so I'm going to make myself take the dog out for a jog.
I'll try to do planks, pushups, dips, and squats at least once a day for the next week - and if I can get DH to go for a jog with me, I'll do that too!

  • @RugbyMamma - nice job on the 10 miler. Another Northern VA here! I live in Alexandria and work in Arlington - I've always wanted to run that race, but keep forgetting to sign up and end up doing the MCM10K instead.

Thanks, @Jcrewgirl85! The ATM is a great race! Enjoy the MCM10K - you'll do great since you've been so active :)  Just listen to your body for sure - I jogged until I got cramping in my lower abs then walked until I got bored lol. I felt a little lame b/c I normally push harder, but I wanted to be safe for the little bambino.

We're a little further out in the burbs than you - we live in Sterling and I work in Herndon.  :)

No, @MKMomma.  I am running the Space Coast Marathon in Cocoa on December 1st.  I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to run the Disney races as they have some of the coolest finishers medals you will ever find; however, it is insane how much it costs for someone out of state to run the Disney races.  The race fees alone are expensive and your entry fee does not include entrance into the park on race morning. So, once you add together your race fee, park entrance fees, airfare, rental car, hotel, food, etc it is just more than I am willing to spend on a race right now.

  • My girlfriends and I are/were talking of running the Disney marathon as our 1st marathon together. I wondered what the cost would actually be for it. Can't believe your race fee doesn't cover entry into the park at least for 1 day.
