Car seats and going home?

I purchased the maxi cosi pria with tiny fit. Brought it to NICU to try LO in and nurses had a fit because they had never seen it before and it looked huge, also they said how am I going to keep her warm without a muff on it. I said that most kids sit in convertible carseats and that I have a truck and infant seats are too long. So we put her in it after DH spent an hour figuring it out. She fits but the chest strap was a little loose. We took her out and then her readjusted, put her back and nurse could get two fingers under chest so she said no. I said we can just keep adjusting till it fits, then LO started to scream so we stopped. They are having the car seat specialist come monday because they wont pass it. Has anyone used this seat? So I ordered two others that I pray fit her and my truck. She is 18.25 inches and 4.7 pounds.

They are thinking about sending her home this week is there anything special you used that is not usual for a normal baby? My sister was a preemie but that was quite a while ago so I forget if we got anything special.
Thanks:)

Re: Car seats and going home?

  • We bought a britax bc it was one of the only carriers that fit under 5lbs.

  • A lot of convertible carseats are only safety rated to 5+ lbs. I haven't heard of that one so I have no idea about it, but the website for my carseat specifies that it is safe for 4 lbs. It's a Chicco keyfit 30. When we came home we asked for a bunch of the little bottles from the NICU because the boys were only eating 45 ml which was less than our home bottles measure. The only other thing I can think of...if she's in preemie diapers still they are kindof hard to find outside the hospital. Good luck! I hope your LO gets to go home soon.

I looked up the seat -- looks like it's a convertible one? I'd suggest getting an infant seat to start -- especially for a preemie, and then you can move to that seat once LO is bigger.

Even with the tiny fit, it might be a stretch for a preemie -- but who knows.

  • We actually used a car bed until LO was over 6 pounds!
  • I think all of the Chicco infant seats are rated at 4 lbs which is why they are so popular with preemies.  We had those for our twins and they are also supposed to have a pretty small footprint in the car if you have limited space.  Another less expensive option is the Graco Snugride 30 which is rated at 4 lbs min too.  I'd highly recommend an infant seat for any newborn, preemie or not.  The ability to carry them in and out of the car without waking them is worth every penny.
  • We got the Chicco keyfit 30

  • We had the Chicco keyfit. But I really recommend an infant bucket seat. It made life so much easier.

  • Keyfit 30 here. She came home at 6 lbs and we still had to put rolled up blankets along side her to keep her head secure and a couple of rolled up diapers under her bum to make the bottom strap secure. The carseat specialist showed us how to do this.

We have a Graco Snugride 30 with an insert, but DS was over 5lbs when we went home.

Our Target and Walmart sell preemie diapers, but not in bulk. Preemie clothes might be a little harder to find

  • We have the safety first air onboard 35. I actually love how it fits our little one and its rated for 4-30 something lbs. It also isn't crazy expensive so if you don't want to spend a ton and just use it until she fits better in the one you have?

  • Keyfit 30 here for twins:)
  • Another Keyfit 30 here - ditto PP's about the bucket seat being invaluable, I can't imagine trying to get G in & out of a regular seat because he's usually sleeping.
Hoping this one stays put a little longer

  • LO failed her car seat test, so we're using a car bed for now. I think we have the Graco snugride, but I'm not sure.

    My Wonder Woman!

  • We have the Britax B-Safe for our twins. They were both 5 lbs when we came home. We had to use rolled up blankets around their heads and washcloths between their legs and the bottom strap. We had to use those until they were 4 weeks. We didn't have trouble finding preemie diapers, but preemie clothes were a little bit of a challenge.
