Torticollis?

Have any of your babies been diagnosed with this? DD doesn't go back to the dr until Oct. 28, but a friend of mine on facebook was saying her son was diagnosed with it. I have read about it and it's where an infant always tilts their head to one side. I hadn't noticed until now but DD always wants to look to her right. Her head doesn't so much tilt as she just turns it all the way to the right. I turn her head to the center or the left and she stays that way for a few seconds and then turns back to the right. I have also noticed the start of a flat spot on the right side of her head because she also loves sleeping on that side. I looked up and have been trying some stretches and also trying tummy time but she HATES it. I'm afraid she might have it because she was also breech for the entire pregnancy.  If your LO has this, what have you been doing to correct it and have you had to go see a physical therapist?

We went to PT for it in both twins. It corrected easily in my youngest but not my oldest. His flat spot worsened into plagiocephaly and he wore a helmet for four months to correct it. At 17m they have zero limitations. It's good that you're repositioning and doing tummy time. I can't see how old your DD is but if you're concerned I would suggest a visit to the pedi to see if a PT referral is needed. If she does have torticollis its important to treat it early to hopefully avoid plagiocephaly.

  • My son had it. He went to pt for a few weeks and it resolved. I'd ask your pedi at the next visit if you are questioning it. Better to catch it early.

  • I asked about it for one of my boys at their 2 mo visit. He was breech and a twin and has a clear preference for one side.

Their pedi said that because he turns his neck easily back and forth and just prefers one side that it isn't toticollis and just to work on repositioning for the time being.

He sleeps in an RNP and I have a snuzzler that I use to cradle his head during naps. I don't leave it in there for night for whatever reason.

  • My daughter had it and we saw a PT for it.  She gave us exercises to work on at home and eventually it got a lot better.
  • Yes our LO has this, along with plagiocephaly. We have PT twice a week. We are also doing tummy time and repositioning as we can.

  • We were in the same situation.  We were referred to a PT and went weekly.  One of my friends suggested a chiropractor.  I was completely against it.  I started doing some research and and actually met with the chiropractor 3 times before I brought my son out of hesitation.  I have been bringing my son weekly for the past 4 weeks and we have seen a world of difference.  His range of motion is remarkable.  It is hard to say if it is the PT, the chiropractor visit, or a combination of both, but my son is turning his head a lot more.  Now we are working on the flat spot that isn't resolving and the fact that he favors his right hand and doesn't use his left.  One thing after another right?

  • Repositioning and doing tummy time will really help with it.  If your LO hates tummy time, just have them lay on your stomach while you are laying down.  Sometimes babies prefer to be on mommy than on the hard ground.  We had to do this for our LO for a while since she hated being on her tummy.  We also had a rolled up blanket that we would put in her RNP while she napped (and we watched her) to help her keep head not in the position that she favored.

Also, tummy time could be just for 2 or 3 minutes several times a day.  It may be worth it for them to fuss for a few minutes and get some of that tummy time in.
