To me, it's no more judgemental than saying I don't like a certain brand of cookies .
Not quite...it's like you're saying if I choose to buy the brand of cookies you don't like, I love my iPhone and my movies more than my family. I'msorrynotsorry, but what you said insults a ton of people who work very hard and still can't afford your fricking amazing organic free range gently slaughtered meat. Ugh. That attitude is disgusting.
I learned something new today. I had no idea this type of ground beef existed. I do have to say reading all the food posts on this board has influenced my decision to go to the farmers market today. My MIL has her own garden and gave us some tomatoes and lettuce a couple weeks ago and it just tasted so darn good. I plan on making this a habit, unfortunately our farmers market closes at the end of october.
Meh, I didn't think pastalady said anything that offensive worthy of a flaming. AG says lots worse about what people eat on the regular and no one bats an eyelash ( well, besides me. lol) The people on this board make me chuckle.
I wasn't intending to flame, but I was kind of appalled at all of the assumptions in that post. That's what really bothered me. You know, like...feel free to eat another country's bad meat while you play on your iPhone at the movies...I'm suuuuure it's fine.
Yeah, if you notice what I said isn't that different than what ag or Kate mw has said. It's kind of a clique mentality. I don't think anyone needs to eat cheap weird meat period. I think what is up for debate is what constitutes cheap weird meat. The one that says 78 percent beef and ground left overs is not suitable for anyone. I think food in North America needs to be rethought. Some of the people who need to use food banks are farmers. If you think there isn't a food crisis you are naive. I admit I judge you if you would rather feed your kid crap than work to make things from scratch. If you buy white wonder read because its cheap, yes I judge you for not buying a 5 lb bag of whole wheat flour and making better bread for cheaper. If you decide to buy some expensive canned fruit when you can get more bang for your buck with a 5 lb bag of apples from a fruit stand, you cannot complain about your food.
But the argument people are making is they buy the wonder read, or whatever, because its cheaper. It's not is what I am saying.
Factor in the time that it takes to make a loaf of bread and the fact that it will go stale much faster than the off-the-shelf stuff and the Wonder bread is almost certainly cheaper. I mean, come on. You're talking about families where one or more adults are often working more than one job in addition to maintaining the household and raising children. You judge people in that situation for not baking their own bread?!? Are you Marie Antoinette?
But the argument people are making is they buy the wonder read, or whatever, because its cheaper. It's not is what I am saying.
You're saying poor people should make their own bread from scratch?
Yeah, um.. I didn't make my bread when I was struggling, and I don't make my bread when I have money. I just actually don't like to bake much at all. I guess if that's judge worthy... I'll happily accept being judged.
I'm a bit astounded at the judgement here, in general, in the past week. And some of it for the absolutely most silliest things ever. It kinda makes me sad.
In theory, what Pasta is saying makes sense. Take the bread for instance, people who can't afford to buy healthy whole grain bread should bake their own, in theory this does make sense. Except, generally the people that can't afford a loaf of wheat bread likely aren't going to have the background to even think about doing it. I worked with low income people for years, most of them were multiple generation poor, raised the same way they were living. For them to even have the idea it's a possibility to go back to an earlier way of life of cooking, wouldn't even compute for them. All I'm saying is, I don't think it's a lack of willingness to work harder to make things better, it's more they don't even realize that's an option.
I do think you're on to something though, while I think them (the majority of the very poor) baking bread is a lot idealistic and not going to happen, I do think that educating them to make the best of their financial situation and learning to eat healthier would be awesome. What if at a food bank you had to watch a 20 minute video before getting your food box that contained dry beans, flour, cornmeal etc. The video could give very quick tutorials on how to prepare dry beans, and show how you could make "x" amount of dinners with what is in your box. For the people that I worked with, this would be a great tool.
I agree. I think part of providing assistance to folks should be education. You can make your money go further and eat healthier if you avoid pre packaged, convenience foods which seem to be the staple of the poor's diets.
The tubes are gross because they're not really just ground beef. It has some amount of filler in it called 'pink slime' that is byproducts from many, many animals. That's why they put it in a packaging that is not transparent. If you're on a budget for meat and have a Costco membership, buy their ground beef and split up the big pack. Costco has stated that they do not use pink slime in their ground beef.

That's why they have 100% ground beef on the label?

Guys....there's gross stuff in everything. Grasshoppers in peanut butter, bugs in potato chips, pink slime in ground beef...can we talk about dandelions now?

There's even bugs/mites in your own EYELASHES. And do you know what lives in your pillows? Forget the food we eat.

Well, the FDA requires that something labeled 100% ground beef be 100% ground beef...so there's that...
