Preemies

When will she walk?

My DD will be 1 year old tomorrow! She was a preemie born at 32 weeks and has done exceptionally well. For the last couple weeks, she's been cruising around furniture and can walk while holding on to stuff. She can hold on with just one hand as well. She can't stand by herself yet. She'll lose her balance & falls if she lets go. I was just wondering how much longer before she starts walking? What's the typical time frame? Maybe she's behind since she's a preemie. Sometimes it's hard to know what milestone to adjust for a preemie.

Re: When will she walk?

  • My son is not there yet, but I know right before my cousins little one walked she was doing the same thing, it will not be long now. It was very soon after she was doing all that.
  • There is no telling and she is most definitely not "behind". If I remember correctly at least 50% of kids don't walk by their first birthday. I think anytime before 18m is "normal". FWIW my oldest twin walked within a week of doing what you described, my youngest twin three months after being able to do that. Kids develop at their own individual rate, preemie or full term.

  • My daughter was about 14 months old/11 months adjusted when she started walking independently.  She did exactly what you're describing for about a month before she started walking on her own.

One thing we did a few times a week was to try to get her to walk to and from us a short distance, and then gradually made it larger.  She would only want to do that on some occasions, and we wouldn't force it.  Walking for FT babies, as others have said, has a large range and it is normal for some to not start until they are 16 or 18 months old, especially if they're doing the stuff that leads up to it.

  • my son was born at 31w5d and is 15 months old (actual). He's been ahead on everything except walking and has been cruising and pushing things around since before he was a year old... he still isn't walking! He will walk holding one hand but he will not stand on his own. The pedi isn't concerned so I'm trying not to be!

  • my son was born at 33w1d and will be 16 months old (actual) very soon. He has been cruising and pushing things around since before he was a year old... And he still isn't walking! He is a stubborn little thing and was standing himself up before he sat up...unusual i know... he didn't put himself into a sitting position until he was 12 m actual. He was capable but refused to do it. He would do this pullup type thing to stand up from his stomach. He will walk holding one hand and stand on his own, but just refuses to walk. After his stubbornness with sitting up, we have decided he will do it when he wants...

  • My 30 weeker was doing those same things at about the same time as your DD, but she didn't start walking until 19 months (17 adjusted). It just depends. I thought with the cruising, she'd be walking in no time.....but not necessarily.
