High-Risk Pregnancy

Failed 1 hour GD test

I found out today that i failed the 1 hour GD test. I have to go back in tomorrow morning to do the 3 hour test. I've been told that many women that fail the 1 hour go on to pass the 3 hour. Who here has failed the 1 hour but past the 3 hour? Also if you failed the 3 hour, did you have to completely change your diet? Check your blood? What changes did you have to make?

I have done some research on GD just in case so i am prepared but would like some info from women who have had it and some advice i guess. Obviously if i do have GD i will discuss it with my Dr. and develop a plan of action. TIA

Re: Failed 1 hour GD test

  • I was tested at 16 weeks and failed the one hour but passed the three hour. They tested me again at 28 weeks and just did the three hour and I failed. If you do fail the three hour and want to try to control the GD without insulin then yes you have to change your diet. Its overwhelming at first but it's really not that bad. Mine is mostly controlled by diet. I have to take insulin at night to control my fasting numbers though. And yes you would have to test your blood. Usually 4 times a day, once when you wake up then one or two hours (depending on your dr) after each meal. Good luck!! Hopefully you pass the three hour!

  • I failed and have had to completely change my diet. It sucks and honestly I don't think it's as easy as people say it is. It's not even the blood testing that bothers me, it's the constantly worrying that my numbers are good. Good luck, I hope you pass!

  • With my first two pregnancies I failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour. This is my third pregnancy and I wasn't so lucky this time having failed both the 1 and 3 hour tests.
To be honest, I was devastated initially. Looking back though, just a couple of weeks in, I can honestly say its not that bad. The hardest part for me is all the planning that goes into getting meal ideas ready that will work with my diet. My doctor gave me a diet that is all based on diabetic exchanges - it's been easy to follow it now that I'm over being so overwhelmed by it. Sure, eating out is hard but it's a small factor and I'm happy that so far it seems like I will be able to manage it with just diet alone.
As far as checking blood sugars, I do so four times/day and though I don't want to see bad numbers, so far I've been doing pretty well.
Good luck though! I hope you are as lucky as I was the first two times around!!!

  • Many people fail the one hour and pass the 3 hour. A lot of my friends passed the 3 hour after failing initially. I wasn't a lucky one, but I definitely know it happens. I wouldn't worry yet until you get the 3 hour results.
  • With all 3 of my previous pregnancies, I failed the one hour, but passed the three no problem.  Best of luck to you!
