nap time during oldest child bus drop off

Right now I get my oldest DD off the bus each day, but in a few months my Mom is going to take over.  My Mom also watches my youngest DD, who is 2.5.  My youngest normally takes a nap between1:30-2 and sleeps for about 2 hours. She is still in her crib, but when she wakes up she just lays in her bed until someone comes to get her.

My oldest DD gets off the bus at 2:40. If this was your house would you either put the youngest one down for a later nap (at 3:00) or get a web based monitor that lets you see the child while you are walking to the bus stop. The stop is about 7 houses down the road. We are on a cul-de-sac in the back of our neighborhood. Or would you do something else?

TIA.

  • I would just change naptime. I wouldn't leave a 2.5 alone. She is at an age where she is capable of getting out of a crib even if she doesn't normally do it. And my kids were napping anymore at that age. You might not have to deal with the situation for long anyways. Nap strikes sneak right up on you.

  • The only issue with pushing the naptime later is that then she'd be waking around 5:00, isn't that going to mess up bedtime?  Bedtime is sacred with me, so I'd rather get her up earlier and then make her nap time earlier.
  • I do worry about bed time since she would be napping until 5. She already gets up around 6/6:15 a.m. so I don't want to wake her any earlier than that.  Also, my Mom watches my youngest at her house and will have to drive to my house for the bus pick up. She lives about 25 minutes away. She could possibly nap from 12-2 but that would be pushing it too close to wake her up and get to my house in time for the bus.
  • we have an early nap time ,12-2pm, because that is what school does. My LO doesn't get up until 7:30am with no problems. I'd rather nap early and have a few hours with no awake LO's in the house than do it after the older LO gets home.

  • If you get a web based monitor that won't help the situation at grandmas :) my almost 3yo was napping at 2 this summer and we've had to move it to 12 bc we pick the boys up at 2:35.

Also....my two older kids napped until their first day of kindergarten. My (will be 3 on Monday) 2.5 year old naps 2 hours a day still :) keep it as long as you can!

  • Is there a neighbor whose kid also gets off at your stop?  Maybe the neighbor could walk your DD to the house.

  • There isn't any neighbors that I know are home every day at 2:40.  My oldest DD also napped until the month before starting kindergarten. I would like my youngest to do the same.

The only problem with laying her down earlier is that my Mom would have to be at our house by noon to do that and she wont want to do that. She has always watched the kids at her house and is more comfortable there.
I think we will just have to have a later nap time.
