Barometer Dropping = Labor??

Have I been living under a rock and this is common knowledge?  I just found out a friend who gave birth a month early was told by her doctor that her early delivery was due to a winter storm.  I saw a bit of info online backing this up.  Mostly articles saying "studies say that..." but no studies attached.  Is anyone else familiar with this?  I'm not really worried, but living in New England and being due in January certainly makes me curious!

Re: Barometer Dropping = Labor??

  • I notice L&D to be busier during storms. The docs say its the change in pressure. I believe it.

  • I have heard about more ladies going into labor during a full moon but not during a winter storm. I guess I will find out as I'm in AK.

  • Oh no! I'm a New Englander, too! I'm already so nervous about going into labor in the winter, I definitely didn't need to hear this about pressure drops and storms :-/
  • I work in L and D and it seems like when there are weather changes we get a lot of ppl that come with there water broken or just in labor. Most of the time its due to their water breaking.

  • Sorry!  Definitely didn't mean to scare anyone, but I guess it's good to know.  Now we just all need a friend who plows to be on call for us just in case!

  • DS was born in a huge rain storm that lasted days here. The rain never let up. The barometer dropped just hours before I went into labor.

  • I worked in Labor and Delivery last January..  the 2 times we had big snowstorms that month we were literally at capacity with laboring women. There is definitely something to that theory, I believe it.

  • I think the L&D workers would know better -- but I'm a meteorologist and have heard the same thing. I've also seen it around a full moon. Full moon is January 16!

  • not that we are cows, but they definitely do this.  We are all mammals though!  So i wouldn't doubt that there isn't some truth to this.

I live in the keys, and 'hurricane babies' is a common term here. Lower pressure seems to induce labour for some reason. There seems to be higher instances of women going into labour during hurricanes. Usually we would stay until a low category 3 (at absolute most), but my husband says we're definitely leaving if one comes this way!!! Coming into the height of season now through October and I am new to this so I am hoping for the best
...... And what can I say I trust the boy;)
  • I've heard that true and also for full moons. December 17th and January 15th. I wonder how many of us this will affect.

  • The whole idea of a full moon bringing on labor is going take on a new meaning this time...my due date might get changed to Jan 16!

    I'll let y'all know!

  • I've heard it more about full moons too than the barometer. I went into labor with my first on the full moon (it was his due date as well).

  • DS was born 5 days early during the big blizzard that hit Chicago in 2011. We had to call an ambulance to come get me - it got stuck at the end of our cul-de-sac, so a 2nd ambulance had to be called.  I then had to trudge through the snow to the end of the next block to even get to that one.
Having another winter baby scares me a little - especially since the farmers almanac says this will be a snowy winter.
My word of advice, if it happens there's nothing you can do about it.  Just make sure both you and DH have something other than snow boots to wear around the hospital.  When I was up and walking the halls they were fine with me wearing non-slip socks (that they provided), but DH had to walk with me in his boots.

  • yes, I was due with my DS in march and my water broke at 37 weeks during a snow storm (we were living in PA at the time). My dr said the weather is a huge indicator of how busy they will be. Kind of how the moons impact the tides or something. obviously I have no clue how this all works but it happened to me.

  • Oh Lord, I have never heard of this and now living in upstate NY I worry what our winter will be like on top of being pregnant during it!  Luckily we live super close, walking distance, to our "back up" hospital should we not make it due to inclimate weather.

  • Lovely.  The Farmers Almanac is predicting a BIG storm for the end of Jan/beginning of Feb in the NorthEast (they've been talking about it non stop the last few weeks because the Superbowl is at the new Meadowlands stadium- which is open top, lol).  Last year they predicted one for Valentines Day weekend, which ended up going just north of us.  It was perfect, since our wedding was Feb 15 and I was not thrilled about the idea of a blizzard.
