Babies: 3 - 6 Months

feeding q

I am in the process of transitioning to formula because I have returned to work and being a teacher, my ability to pump is not very high.  I have been giving DS 2 oz of formula with four oz of breastmilk.  He eats about every three hours.  It seems when I go to feed him he is dying of hunger...reaches for bottle, cries if cant get to it fast, sucks down rather quickly.  He sucks down the whole six oz and still seems like he could eat more.  My q is should I be giving him more than 6 oz?  I have always nursed him up until this past month. He is five months old now. Should I continue 6oz, bump to 8 oz bottles, or add solids to his diet?  Help!

Re: feeding q

  • That seems like a lot? Google paced feeding, see if that might help him know his satiety cues?

  • I agree with previous poster.  It takes like 20min for most babies' body to register full.  Were you breastfeeding before or always pumping?  If you switched from the breast baby is likely gulping it back way faster than at the breast and isn't feeling full right away.  You can switch nipples to get slower flow.

I wouldn't increase it amount before trying to slow down the feeds.  Pause every ounce or so to burp him, this slows things down.  Also, Google the charts for how much babies should take in a day and see where he's at.
