DD was born march '12 and we just found out were 6 weeks with number two. Thinking into the future -- how to have a two yo adjust to new baby?? Kinda nervous and a little scared. Any tips??
I got pregnant when my oldest was about 1 1/2. It was a little hard sometimes reminding him not to climb/jump on mommy, but he started to get really snuggly with me when I was about 8 months pregnant. I bought him a little boy baby doll with bottles, bowl, spoon, etc. to play with but there really is no explaining to a little one that age that there is a baby in there, they really don't get the concept until the baby is actually in front of their eyes.
He was 2 years, 4 months when little brother joined the family, and he just loved him. He would help me fetch diapers/wipes and I would give him a newborn diaper for his baby, too. When I would change them side by side on my bed, he would lay there beside his little brother and hold his hand. I let him wipe little brother very gently with the wash cloth at bath time, and he would sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to him at bedtime and pace the hallway with me while I walked and shushed the baby to sleep. When it was time for cereal, I let him give the first spoonful. He was very involved.
The only problems I had back then was that big brother would wake little brother up from naps on purpose because he wanted him to stay up and play with him, and he did revert on the potty training for a little while because he wanted to lay beside his brother to get changed instead of using the potty. We are over that now and fully potty trained. Now that the little guy is 1.5 and big brother is 3, there is more fighting over toys since they are interested in a lot of the same things.
Mine are two years apart and I love the gap! I really wish we would have gone for #3 with the same gap, but we are waiting longer. As for tips: make sure that you keep #1 involved in what is going on - even if they don't completely "get it." I made sure that I still would hand baby over to someone for a little while and have one on one time with DD#1. Also, my DD did not have that many jealousy issues. She was really into babies right around age 2 so she thought it was pretty neat to have a baby at our house. We did get her a doll that looked more like a real baby so she could do what I was doing with her sister.
Now they get along great and I love how well they play together. Congrats! And you have lots to look forward to.
DD was a March 2012 baby and we just found out we are expecting #3! I'm actually not as worried about it as I was bringing DD home (DS is an April 2010 baby, so even closer in age range than this one!)
Good luck!
