Preemies

TDAP Frustration

We were warned about ourselves and any caregivers needing to receive the TDAP shot I think in 6th month of pregnancy. our Pedi just warned us of it again.   He and I both did and she's about to start being cared for by two family members and a friend next week.  The friend already had the shot recently for her field.  My relative is checking to see if she's had it with no complaints.  His mother simply refuses to get the shot.  This is recommended for all babies but I'm thinking with her being a preemie out of the NICU it would be especially beneficial.  I do not know her reasoning but she's a stubborn woman when it comes to her own medical health.  She works one day a week with the public as a cashier and would be watching our baby for now one possibly more days a week.  We offered to pay for the shot if it's a money issue but she won't budge.  What would you do or say?  I'm wanting to call the Pedi to see what they recommend.

Re: TDAP Frustration

  • Pedi will recommend anyone who is around LO regularly should get the shot.

  • Well ultimately it's up to you. I actually live in an area with high rates of pertussis so I made all my family members get the TDAP before they could see my little guy. I believe they recommend it so strongly because of how serious pertussis is. If I were in your situation I would probably let her know that she will not be allowed to be near the baby. But I'm also kind of a snappy bitch when it comes to my sons health. So I guess I agree you should call your pedi and ask them what they think.

  • I had some relatives who refused to get the tdap shot. They went a whole year without seeing my babies.

  • I'd tell her she cannot watch or hold the baby. Grandchild or not. The baby comes first.

Sorry you are dealing with this.

  • I told all of our relatives and made them provide proof. Otherwise they would have no physical contact with them.
I'm a bitch like that though.

All of this. All of the grandparents and care givers were vaccinated. Pertussis is a big deal and lands healthy full term babies in the hospital. It is awful for preemies.
  • I agree with others. Don't let her see or watch the baby until she agrees to get the shot and she gives you proof that she did.

  • Thanks all.  Called the Dr first thing and the nurse that answered said well she's building immunity after her vaccination so I think she'd be okay but checked with Dr and called back saying no, ANYONE around baby MUST  get Tdap and could result in death should she be exposed.  80 % of sources babies get from is close family member.  Sent to him in text with some expletives he sent to his sister who has convinced her she must get it so she's getting it tomorrow or Sat.  I don't know why she was being such a snot.  It's one thing to not take your own meds or go to Dr but when it's for safety of your grandchild!?!  She's the main one always monitoring me, did you feed her? does she need to be fed? is that 3 oz?  You're giving her 3 oz right? Is that too hot!?!   That woman's trying my patience.   Going through all family now to check on vaccination..
We are paying everyone to watch her.  My relative charges, my friend has refused payment but I'm making her take it somehow.  Not sure if his mom will take payment but it's being offered.
