Babies: 3 - 6 Months

seperation anxiety?

I didn't think it could possibly start at 4 and a half months but it sure seems like my lo has separation anxiety. He cries when anyone other than me or my dh holds him, and at this point my mom can't even look at him with him bursting into tears. I left him at my mil's and she called me 45 minutes later to say he was inconsolable. Anyone else with an early starter?

Re: seperation anxiety?

  • This happened with DS1. It started right at 3 months and lasted until was about 18 months old. We basically couldn't leave him with anyone during that entire time and no one could hold him, it sucked, but I knew he'd eventually outgrow it and he did. Just on his own time. I say just give your baby what he needs, the comfort of his mom and dad.

  • DS1 did not want anyone else to hold him but myself or DH. I can remember as far back as him being 2 months old. It was like this until about 6 or 7 months old. It sucked! Thank god DS2 doesn't mind anyone holding him. But yes, separation anxiety can start that early on.

  • DD does this off and on.  Lots of times if I'm in the room she won't let anyone  else hold her.  I think it's a stage.  DS was never this way.

  • LO went thru this too. For about a month she didn't want anyone but me, DH was hit or miss if she would go.  SHe has passed this mostly now.

  • My first was like this from that early of an age. She would even cry if someone looked at her in her carrier in the grocery store, and she wouldn't let anyone else hold her. It took her a long time to get used to her day care provider. She is 3 and has grown out of it a little, but that is still her personalitu for the most part. She ia a slow adopter of new people and places, doesn't like big crowds or new places and will cry if I drop her off somewhere new like a camp or class.
  • My LO is going through something similar now. It started around 4 months. She warms up to my mom and grandmother more easily, but every time my sees her she cries. She's also very shy and serious when strangers talk to her. Last night we left her with a babysitter for the first time, and initially while I was home, she was crying and screaming in the babysitter's arms, completely unconsolable until I took her and soothed her. And I'm using some tough love because we left her with the babysitter anyway, and she was eventually OK. Took 2 hours for her to calm down enough to sleep, but I hope it's something she'll get used to or grow out of.
