Physical therapy for head shape...

I know that it is probably not the same everywhere, but for those of you that have went, what was your first appointment like?

We go next Wednesday.  I am taking my Mom to help me with my lo just in case there's a lot of paperwork.  I am also kind of nervous, I just want to know what they think about his head shape.

Re: Physical therapy for head shape...

  • DS has been in PT to address torticollis since about 8 weeks. My DS's neck muscles were really tight on one side &, as a result, he would lay/sit with his head turned to one side. Favoring one side affected his head shape (his head is flatter on one side than the other). He was fitted for and received a DOC Band about 3 weeks ago.
As far as the PT evaluation. Try not to worry, it really wasn't a big deal. Just listen to your Mommy instinct & go to someone you trust. Also, remember that the sooner it's addressed, the quicker the treatment. Good luck!

  • agreed the sooner its addressed the better.  we went to PT once. our LO really liked it.  but it was determined he didn't have torticollis and he just developed the flat head for other reasons so we did the DOC band and its worked great.  he wore it for 6 weeks total (from 4 months to 5.5 months) and now he's done and his head shape is all good.  good luck and don't worry.

  • Sort of the same as meladamczyk...DS was in PT to address torticollis, he had more of a bulge in front because he favored one side.  With more tummy time and positioning we didn't need a helmet. He has been in PT since 8 weeks and the helmet evaluation was at 4 months.  You do what you think is best because some Dr. are more pro helmet then others.
