UPDATED: Creative ways to announce gender

We are having a family get together tonight (eek!) with both sides to announce that we are having a boy.  I have been racking my brain the past few days trying to come up with a fun, creative way to announce the news without just shouting out, "it's a boy". I thought about doing the whole blue icing in the cake thing, but we are going out to dinner, so I don't really want to bring a cake to a restaurant, and I really can't seem to come up with anything else. I was just looking for some other ideas. Obviously something easy I could accomplish in the next 6 hours as the dinner is tonight. I really want to do something creative but am drawing a blank. Thanks in advance! :)

  • oooo! I love the idea of blue water or a drink of some sort (depending on whether you think people will want drinks)

  • This is how we revealed the gender....however we already had a name picked out when we made the announcement. I went to Walmart in the craft section and bought three packs of little wooden letters. I put all the letters that spelled baby's name in a baggy. I made three sets and I did spray paint the correct side of the letters. You could get Scrabble letters too. Then I wrote a poem about a surprise everyone had to try to spell out. We did three teams...hince the three baggies. My mom and dad won. I actually had a dream about it which gave me the idea! It was fun!

Hmmm could you get to restarunt before and talk to the bartender about making some sort of blue signature drink?! Even if you had to bring in blue food coloring yourself. They could bring the round to the table when everyone is sitting. Even putting a drop in everyone water glass would be fun :) you could bring in blue candles or something and order dessert for everyone in advance and have them put them in. Or you guys could wear various shades of blue and be the last people to show up. Walking up to the table in all blue would be subtle but I'm sure they'd catch on :)
Thanks for all the great ideas! I love the idea of blue water or drink. That is super cute! The scrabble tiles is also cool if we had a name picked out.
  • I think for the grandparents I'm going to give them a card that says "it's a.." On the front and then in the inside either boy or girl. I really want to capture their expressions so I'm thinking of taking pictures. And then for my BF's little sister I'm going to make a cupcake with the frosting the appropriate color inside. She's seven and super excited about being an auntie.

Wow you're good at this game. If I were going some sort of gender reveal I'd use one of these ideas.

  • Everyone has so many great ideas!! Love the drink idea! I might have to steal that idea! We find out the gender on Sept 6th and was thinking of doing a family dinner the following night to reveal the gender to the Fam! Thanks!!

  • Such great ideas!  I know it's too late for me to add more to this but I saw an idea to give the waiter an envelope with the gender in it and ask them to bring one dessert (something with blue) for a boy or a dessert with something pink/red for a girl.  Like blueberry pie or strawberry shortcake.

Thanks again ladies for all the awesome ideas! We ended up doing 2 things.  I bought some pink "it's a girl" balloons and some blue "it's a boy" balloons. I had everyone pick whichever color they wanted based on if they thought boy or girl, then had them all try to blow up the balloons at the same time. I had poked holes in the pink balloons, so only the blue "it's a boy" balloons would stay inflated. That's when we had the waiter bring out blue italian sodas for the table. Everyone loved it!

    that's such a cute idea!!!

  • Aw, yay! Glad it went well.

Sidebar: I can't blow up balloons (like, at all... something about how my nose and mouth connect is off and I can't get enough power through just my mouth) so I would have totally screwed up your plan if my blue balloon didn't inflate!
