Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Speech and sign language

DS (13.5 months) doesn't really have any words - he says "mama" when distressed, babbles "dadadada" when he is happy, and when we point to a book, he says "boo" (can't make the "k" sound).  We've been teaching him simple sign language since 9 months but he has never signed.  He follows one-step directions fairly well.  I'm not worried per se but I am curious as to whether this is considered a bit behind.

Re: Speech and sign language

  • I've noticed with both my kids that their language development came in spurts.  I think pedi's like to see a couple of words by 15months.  So your son might be "behind" another 13.5mo today but all of a sudden in the next month he'll pick up 5 words and they will be at the same level by 15months.

  • My son was on the same boat as yours, that was just a few months ago. He has learned quite a few words since then and learned how to say shoe instead of goo. He has learned bang bang when holding toy guns, makes car noises with cars, says hi and bye to everyone at the grocery store.

I really want to start teaching him some signs but at this point I don't know that it'd mean much since he's so close to talking. I wouldn't be worried if I were you but you can always talk to your pedi if you want :)
