Radon when prego

Hello,
I'm 14w5d today. We had planned on taking a short trip to my dads house this weekend and being there Friday and Saturday night. My dads house has recently tested positive for radon. My question is : do you all think it is unsafe for me to go? He has lived there 5+ years and who knows how long there has been radon there but mostly likely the whole time he's lived there. The levels are not hygh enough gor him to mive but high enough that it needs to be fixed. Should I call my dr or is that silly?

  • Yup, call your doctor.

  • Definitely call your doctor but in all honesty I live in the great state of New Hampshire and everyone's homes have radon in the water. The way it's ingested is through steam. As long as you don't take a scalding hot shower you'll be fine. He needs to get a water filtration system ASAP. Unfortunately they're not cheap. They come standard with homes up here in NH.
  • I grew up in a house that's in an area known for having high radon levels, particularly problematic in the basements where the air gets trapped and the gas builds up. We actually need to have our house tested.

As far as I know there's no risk to the baby, it's you that is put at higher risk for lung cancer with exposure. Here's a link to the EPA's site all about radon! https://iaq.supportportal.com/link/portal/23002/23007/Article/21291/What-are-the-health-effects-from-exposure-to-radon

  • Radon isn't positive or negative, it's an amount. A level over 4 is considered unsafe. I live in NH too and Radon systems do not come standard, and we do not have radon in our well water. If the level is very high, I might be nervous, but if its only slightly high and you don't spend the whole visit in the basement, I wouldn't worry much. The levels reduce drastically by floor.
