Pregnant and painting?

We are really trying to get our rooms organized upstairs. We are shifting one of the guest rooms to a room to make that room a nursery. So both rooms have to be painted. I've offered to help out as much as I can to get it done ASAP. Think a little bit of painting is okay?

Re: Pregnant and painting?

  • I asked my OB, and she said most latex paint in NA is all safe; we used Dulux Diamond. I kept the windows wide open, had the ceiling fan on, and just took it easy!

  • Loading the player...
  • My doc said the same. Good ventilation, take breaks, if you feel dizzy or queasy... Stop. Have fun!
  • Definitely, latex paint is fine as long as there is ventilation.  I painted the porch yesterday.

Do NOT use varnishes or wood stains with polyurethane, unless you've got a full respirator mask, as those fumes are kind of toxic.
  • If ur dr said its fine, I would say go for it. Many dh is very over protective and he wouldn't even paint (me there or not while pregnant) and he said we won't paint when the baby is young because it's not good to put a baby in a rm that has been painted within 6 months which I think is ridiculous. I smile at him and say ok hunny. We have no reason to paint the rm now that we plan to use. But we plan on moving in the spring and I will def want to paint my new house and there's no way in hell I will wait 6 mths to move in. So we will see what happens.

He won't even let me stand in the same rm as the microwave when it's on and there was one time where I was doing something in the kitchen and he came and stood behind me like he was shielding me and u realized the Microwave was on at the time and he was "blocking me". It's cute but a little obsessive at times.

    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • I painted DS' room with low-VOC paint when I was 17 weeks. I just wore a face mask and kept the window open (and the ceiling fan on, too).

I think you'll be totally fine. Just make sure to keep the air flowing in the room, and take breaks frequently if need be. :)

  • My doctor said painting was fine, as long as there is lots of ventilation and I don't overdo it. Also, she said to leave anything that requires a ladder for DH!

  • We are renovating our basement.  I will be painting the entire basement next week.  I've done some sort of painting (the girls room with my first and the entire upstairs with my second) while pregnant with both kids so why stop now?  If I was high risk or had bleeding issues or something then I wouldn't be painting, but with a relatively normal, healthy pregnancy I don't think there is any reason why you can't paint.

  • All of the above, although my DH still won't let me do any of the painting... so looks like DD and I will be Shopping for nursery goodies and her big girl room decorations while he paints!
  • Yes, it's totally fine with proper ventilation and latex paint. FWIW, Behr (HD's brand) is completely no-VOC now and has very little fumes at all. I just painted our master this past weekend. Have fun!

  • Ditto the "it's fine". I did it late in my 3rd trimester with DS when I got fed up on waiting for DH to paint our guest room. I used low-voc paint, kept the door and windows open and wore a mask.

  • Painting is definably ok. I work for Sherwin Williams and work with paint everyday. Most paints these days are low or zero VOC which means they are not harmful anymore. The odor of paint is not bad either and there are even paints that are odor free. I'd recommend using the Harmony or Emerald line of paint from Sherwin Williams, it is a little more expensive than Behr but a much better product and there are almost always sales going on. There is one starting August 25 to September 2 in all SW in the country, 30% off all paints. Also all of our tints are zero VOC unlike Behr so you are not adding them to the paint when you tint them to a color, Behr Paints are only zero VOC if not tinted. If you have any other questions about paint just ask! I know way more about paint than I ever wanted to know haha
  • Thanks everyone!! The painting continues tonight!
  • I painted my sons nursery when pregnant. Just follow the suggestions others have said and you should be fine.
