Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Floppiness after first vaccines

Within 32 hours of getting her first vaccination (2months), my baby had two episodes of floppiness or rather she fell asleep and we were unable to wake her up. She woke up by herself a couple of minutes later. She was throughout still breathing and had a heart rate. We called an ambulance, but, by the time they came, she was fine and was crying. The second time happened 45 minutes after the ambulance left. We immediately went to the emergency. Luckily so far, nothing else has happened to her. Did anyone else experience this after their baby received the first immunization? What did the doctors do? They kept my baby for observation for 48 hours. My baby did not have any fever and she receives breast milk.

  • Floppiness? As PP said, babies tend to be very sleepy after vaccines. It is totally normal. Let that baby sleep!
  • As PP said, she was probably just exhausted. However, DS1 would pass out after crying really hard until he was about 18 month old. The first time he did it was around 10 weeks. I had him propped on the Boppy and he rolled to the side and bumped his head on our hardwood floors. He cried, and I picked him up, and he passed out in my arms. Completely limp, but breathing. He would do it any time he got hurt, but it was from holding his breath while crying. I learned to blow in his face to make him take a breath. He grew out of it, but it was so scary! He's a very healthy four year old now.

  • Vaccines make babies (and people of all ages, really) very sleepy. My LO slept more consecutive hours the day after her shots than she typically does during her long stretch at night.
If your LO didnt have a fever and was still breathing, she was fine. Just let her sleep it off.
