Cloth Diapering

Favourite CD brand?

I've just recently switched to CD from disposables just because my DD has had bad rashes to disposables. We only use disposables on laundry day or for car trips now honestly.

My best friend turned me on to Alva Baby diapers as they have snaps, and are pretty inexpensive. So far I do like them, though they leak at night.

What are your favourite brands to use, and why do you like them so much?

Re: Favourite CD brand?

  • My favorites are green mountain diapers prefolds (we have a variety of covers).  Everyone thinks prefolds are going to be so difficult, but we've never had leaks and they're SO easy to wash/dry/put back in the drawer (no stuffing of diaper required).  After about 2 weeks, I could put a prefold on with a snappi with my eyes closed, no big deal.

My favorite pocket diapers are Tots Bots Easy Fit.  I have both snaps and aplix, and the aplix is by far the best out of any of the other brand diapers I own.  The prints are super cute.  The diaper inserts are connected to the diaper (like an AIO), but they hang dry just as fast as my other pocket diapers.  I like that I don't have to find the right insert for the right diaper, since they're connected.  The only downfall is they're a bit pricey.

I'm not surprised your Alva's are leaking at night... What inserts are you using?  A lot of people (including myself) use fitted diapers and wool or PUL covers overnight to prevent leaks - something worth looking into!

At night I am using a bamboo diaper with 1 mircofiber and one bamboo insert. So I'm using 2 inserts at night, but the bamboo ones are thin. During the day they work amazing though, just having issues at night.
  • Loading the player...
  • Probably more absorbency then... We typically use a tots bots bamboozle fitted diaper (with the insert that it came with - it snaps in), plus a hemp insert or two, plus a charcoal bamboo doubler on the outside of the diaper.  Is the diaper soaked in the morning?
  • I second more absorbency for night. I use mostly pockets during the day, but a bamboo fitted for overnight. I use SBish OBF with both inserts it comes with and either fleece pants or a PUL cover overtop. As far as favourite brands, bum genius 4.0 with snaps is probably the best all around diaper I have. For a trim day diaper I love fuzzibunz elite one size (they have snaps too). My favourite aplix diaper is tots bots easy fit for the same reasons pp listed. Just in my one size stash I have 12 different brands, and they all have ups and downs-it depends on what you like.

  • Alvas are fine, but with one of their (not great) MF inserts and a bamboo, it's not surprising you're getting leaks overnight. Two bamboo inserts would be daytime stuffing for DD. I'd try stuffing with 3 bamboo or switch to a fitted with a cover or prefold + bamboo insert with a cover for overnight. Generally I've had fewer leak issues when using either of those as opposed to a pocket diaper.

For pockets I have Kawaii, BumGenius and Rumparooz. They all have their pros/cons, but honestly my overall favorite are the Kawaii which are about 1/3 the price of the other two. I also use prefolds and covers quite a bit. My favorite prefolds are GMD as they are absorbent, easy to launder and very durable, though the same can be said for pretty much any prefold except for Gerber. For covers I like Bummis Super Brite and Super Whisper the best, though I also use Flips, Thirsties, Grovia and Blueberry.

  • @kjsmith9 Yes the diaper is always soaked in the morning, or after long naps. She moves around a lot in her sleep, and is a tummy sleeper.

I know for sure I can't afford bumgenius at present. Sadly I go with alva's because of their price. However, I had a friend suggest the thick charcoal bamboo inserts for nap/overnights, so I may try that. She said usually charcoal bamboo is a lot more absorbent and thicker.

    Anything against buying used?

  • Absolutely nothing against buying used.  Just make sure they're in decent condition before spending money.

This is where I buy my charcoal bamboo inserts (clicky) - brand new they're $4.70 each, and we haven't had a single leak at night since we started using them.

Also, if you're on a tight budget... Maybe look into Kawaii diapers.  We have some original square tabs (clicky) - they fit much better and just feel like better quality than Alvas.  My LO is currently 18lbs at 8 months - these started fitting around 12 weeks old.  And the link I put in for the kawaiis is to superstash.net, which is a great place to order from (highly recommended by many mamas on this board!)... Maybe also look at the Kawaii Heavy Wetters (we don't have them, but I've read decent things).

Our stash includes BG 4.0s, BG elemental, TinyTush Elite, RAR, Alva's, and prefolds/covers. By far we prefer the prefolds and covers for daily use. They are less bulky than the pockets for the diaper bag and easier to maintain in general. We just use the Cotton Babies prefolds, and the Flip and Blueberry covers are our favorites. The seem to fit DD better and we never have any leaks. We really don't like the Thirsties covers as much as we thought we would based on reviews. They feel more flimsy than the other covers and we occasionally have leaks. The Alva pockets are OK for a couple of hours, but I definitely think that paying a little extra for the BG 4.0s is worth it. We use them with the OS insert and a hemp insert overnight. Leaks overnight are extremely rare for us.
  • Thank you ladies! We have something called "Just Between Friends" here twice a year. It's a consignment sale that's usually a weekend long, and I was going to go this year and see if they have cloth diapers there. Now I know what brands to look at. I am always looking for more diapers, because right now I only have about 12 diapers and have to wash daily. It would be nice to just do laundry every other day!
  • If you are looking for budget friendly choices look at an econbum cover with three prefolds... the set is like $11 most places and works wonders... it is my fav of all of my dipes, including much pricier ones... I add a doubler at night or for some naps... but not always... I think I got the last one on cottonbabies with free shipping...
