Night feed weaning??

Just wondering what the purpose of night feeding weaning other than more sleep for mom.. I'd there any other reasons people do it? I almost feel guilty about considering it but my son is 5 months old and 17.8lbs so he's clearly eating enough.. If anyone has done this with their baby how old we're they how much did they weigh and how did u go about doing this

Re: Night feed weaning??

  • I would reconsider when he is 8-9 months, but until then I wouldn't stop MOTN feedings while he is still so young, especially if it's only once per night. Sounds like he needs the milk and the cuddles! :)

  • If you do not want to stop feeding him then you shouldn't. But there are many babies at this age that are STTN that don't need the night feeding.

  • I'm 140 lbs and I eat enough but sometimes get hungry at night too... I don't understand that logic
  • Our baby is 4 1/2 months and we did this a few weeks ago.  She slept from about 6:30 pm to about 6:30 am with one MOTN feeding somewhere between 1:30 am and 3:30 am, but she keep pushing it back further and further.  She naturally moved her own motn feeding to 4:30 and we thought "ok, no point in feeding her and then putting her back to sleep for an hour".  We tried keeping her up a little later, feeding her about 20 minute before bed and  at night when she woke up we would pat her back to sleep without feeding her.  After about a week she started sleeping all the way through the night (although now she wakes up at 5:30 instead of 6:30, but that actually works great for us).  When she wakes up, she' s not starving- she actually plays a little bit before she eats and her weight is still great, so I know she's getting enough.  Hope this helps!
  • True, but you're probably not eating a strict diet that provides all the nutrients you need, like a baby does.
  • We did this with my oldest son at the recommendation of our pediatrician.  He was six months old and the pediatrician believed he was waking out of habit and that to find out we should decrease the bottle by one ounce every couple nights (assuming he did ok with less ounces).  We did this over the course of about two weeks and the reduced ounces didn't phase him.  When we got to two ounces, he stopped waking up on his own.  So in our case, I believe the pediatrician was right and it was best for both my son and us.
  • We did it when we noticed LO wasn't really eating much before falling back to sleep in the MOTN. Though, she had STTN several times before. So when the 4-month sleep regression hit and she started waking up, I nursed her for a few nights before letting her CIO for a couple nights and then she went back to STTN (she had already been sleep trained before). She still wakes up occasionally, but just cooes and makes baby sounds for a few before falling asleep again.

I'd say it depends on how much your LO eats during the MOTN feeding. Like PP said, sometimes they do it out of habit. If it's not bothering you to get up with him, then I'd let him phase it out himself. But if you can tell its out of habit, you could try just letting him go til he falls back to sleep or just gradually decrease his feeding.
