Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Yogurt

DS is almost 8 months and has been on solids since he was 4 months old. He's been a very good eater since day one, but i've read about people giving babies yogurt. I know they make baby yogurt, and gerber makes baby yogurt that's sold by the baby food, but was wondering when/if you gave your baby yogurt. I just don't want him to be missing on nutrients that he needs by me not doing my research! Thanks ladies:)

Re: Yogurt

  • i gave my 6 mo old the gerber yogurt and it seemed to upset his tummy.  he didn't digest it as well.  he really, really liked it but then about 1-2 hours later he seemed to have tummy discomfort.

  • A lot of the "baby yogurt" I've looked at is loaded with sugar. So I introduced it by giving LO plain full fat yogurt with fruit puree mixed in. He didn't do so well with it, but he has diary sensitivity anyway, so I wasn't too surprised (he's on a "gentle" formula with the milk proteins broken down). I have also given him goat milk yogurt, which he really likes and his stomach seems to handle it just fine.

  • Baby yogurt is full of sugars. Honestly I would skip those. I have been feeding DD full fat, plain greek yogurt and she likes it. I usually just mix some in with her food (typically any fruit) and honestly even I think it's pretty good. DD is 7 1/2 months and I started yogurt about 2-3 weeks ago.

  • I started my LO at 7m on Gerber yogurt mixed with a little bit of oatmeal and she loves it!  She is 9 months now and we have not had any tummy trouble.

  • Plain full fat yogurt is fine. I mix it with reg oatmeal and fresh fruit, and feed it to DS at lunchtime. Most baby yogurts have fruits in them already, hence the high sugar content. Stonyfield's YoBaby makes a plain one, and it's pretty much the same as its full fat plain (YoBaby just costs more).

I want to give DS yogurt for the healthy bacteria benefits. I buy a full fat ones from a local farm. Unlike Stonyfield, this local brand has just milk and bacteria cultures.  Stonyfield ones have pectin in them (not necessarily a bad thing, I just don't want any other stuff in DS food unless needed).
