Placenta encapsulation with a hospital birth?

Sorry if this has been posted recently....anyone have experience with placenta encapsulation after a hospital birth? I never even thought to ask last time, and will ask Dr today, but any advice? I didn't have PPD with my son, but I definitely had the baby blues, and I know this would help. Thanks!

  • It's totally ok, I think you would just need to provide a sterile bag for it, and then just arrange for the person encapsulating it for you to pick it up?
Not sure of the logistics, before you talk to the doctor I would make some calls and ask doulas or those certified in the Chinese method of encapsulation and ask what they think.

  • I did.  My doula took the placenta with her when she left.  She also let the nurse know that we wanted to keep it.  The nurse put it aside after the doctor looked at it and made sure it did not get thrown away.  I brought a cooler and bags with me to the hospital.  The doula packed it up with some ice and took it with her.
  • I haven't done it but I will be doing it this time. I found a doula that will come pick it up after delivery. I spoke with the hospital first to make sure I could take it and to find out the process. I was told that its biohazardous material and that I would have to make arrangements to refrigerate it since they cannot do that. So I will bring a cooler and bags and get ice from the hospital.

I had bad baby blues after DS and I want to do whatever I can to feel better this time. The extra $150 to do this seems to be worth it from what I've read.

  • I did it. My doula does placenta encapsulation and the hospital where I delivered actually encourages it. So she came with a cooler and whatnot and took care of all of the biohazard paperwork. Just check with your hospital and see if the person doing the encapsulation can pick it up.

  • No prior experience, but I am planning on doing it this time.  We have been given a list of instructions on how to store and preserve the placenta ourselves.  My midwife told me that the hospital won't mind releasing it to us, but they will take no part in holding it for me until my discharge.  Then the woman we have hired for the encapsulation will pick it up from us either when we leave the hospital or soon after we get home.
