Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Early teething

My DD turned 3 months this week. She started teething a week before. Lil tooth is barely sticking a corner out on her bottom gums.
What are some tricks you used for an early teether? I'm not giving her meds. I tried teething rings but her mouth is so tiny and she of course isn't really able to hold on to things to keep it in her mouth.
Also My older daughter started teething early too. She had two teeth pop all the way through by 4 months. But I don't remember her having so many nasty diapers while teething.
Anyone else have extra dirty diapers while teething? Poor baby I change her immediately but she still got a rash on her bum.

Re: Early teething

  • DD has 2 bottom teeth poking through her bottom gum right now at 4 months 1 week.  At the 4 month appt the doc said I could slice a pear or apple real thin and freeze it then put it in cheesecloth and let DD chomp down on it.  He said the sweetness would make her want to chew on it and the cold would help soothe the pain.  He also said baby anbesol or orajel is fine but reading the side of the box it says if your LO is under 4 months of age to ask your doc before using so you might want to check with yours.

I also wet a washcloth and let it get chilled in the fridge and let DD chew on that to provide a little relief.  She has had a few more messy diapers but so far no rash.  Getting her down for bedtime was hard tonight though because she was so uncomfortable.  Good luck to you!!

  • Thank you! And I feel you on the sleep issue. Mine woke up EVERY hour last night to comfort nurse. She normally sleeps through the night.

  • I know you say no meds, but FWIW, Tylenol is very safe to give. Hylands teething gel works great too (it's homeopathic)
  • I don't like just giving Tylenol for anything, but for the day when the tooth is actually cutting, I have no problem giving it to her. Can you imagine how bad that would hurt??? She also preferred gum massages with my finger over any teething toy the day each tooth was cutting.

  • oh yes-- I used to give DD a frozen toothbrush. She loved it.
also frozen celery. she would rub it on her gums- she had no teeth so she couldn't bite off any and choke, and I'd watch her very close so when it was worn down, I'd switch with a new piece.
