Car stolen with baby inside!

There was a giant police chase in my town that ended up involving helicopters and, apparently, some local FBI agents.  I'm really glad they caught the guy.  I don't think anyone ever deserves to have any kind of property stolen.  But I am always mystified that someone will walk away from their car and leave it running.  More mystified that they would do this with their child inside.  And I'm someone who has no problem with someone leaving their child in their locked car for a couple of minutes.

A woman was picking up her older son from a babysitter or daycare and left her other kid in the car with it running.  It was reported as a carjacking at first but apparently the guy just hopped in and drove it away.

  • I cannot even imagine the kind of screams that came from her when she saw the car moving.  It's almost too hard to imagine.

  • If she didn't leave her kid in the car, she probably wouldn't have freaked out so bad.  I read way too many stories of people leaving their kids in the cars and the deaths caused.  I'm sure she was running in and back out, but still.

The deaths are usually caused by the heat. That is not an issue when the car is on. I am not justifying what she did but get the facts straight.

I get that, I read the facts.  Point is, if she had taken her kid out of the car, it wouldn't be an issue.  There is no reason to leave a kid in the car to walk away where the car is out of sight.  That is just lazy.  And unsafe.  So the heat didn't get this kid.  A robber did.

  • Like I said - I don't even think it's a problem to leave them in the car alone for a couple of minutes.  And even I find this story to be risky behavior.  I just don't know why you would leave it running.  Turn the car off!  No one can hotwire a car in the time it takes to ring a doorbell.  There are some benefits I guess to growing up in a crime ridden city - if you left you keys in the ignition there is no way it would be there 10 seconds later.

I've read people saying that they leave their car running with the kid in it because they have some feature where they can do it and take the keys with them.  Still unsafe.  A car thief isn't going to check and see if you've used your remote start.  They're going to smash the window and try to drive it away.  Even if they don't get far I wouldn't want them smashing the window with your kid in it.

  • Right but a thief isn't going to check that before he decides to get in the car anyway.  So while they can't actually steal it they will be IN the car.  Or smashing the window and then getting in the car.  I understand you wouldn't do it but it's just something I've noticed people saying - that it's safe to leave it running because the keys aren't in it.
