There was a giant police chase in my town that ended up involving helicopters and, apparently, some local FBI agents. I'm really glad they caught the guy. I don't think anyone ever deserves to have any kind of property stolen. But I am always mystified that someone will walk away from their car and leave it running. More mystified that they would do this with their child inside. And I'm someone who has no problem with someone leaving their child in their locked car for a couple of minutes.
A woman was picking up her older son from a babysitter or daycare and left her other kid in the car with it running. It was reported as a carjacking at first but apparently the guy just hopped in and drove it away.

I've read people saying that they leave their car running with the kid in it because they have some feature where they can do it and take the keys with them. Still unsafe. A car thief isn't going to check and see if you've used your remote start. They're going to smash the window and try to drive it away. Even if they don't get far I wouldn't want them smashing the window with your kid in it.
