High-Risk Pregnancy

For those of you that had GD with previous pregnancies

Based on my A1C levels ( I was a 5) my doctor is confident that the diabetes will disappear once I give birth. I was wondering though did you follow the diet for a few days afterwards to make sure? Did you have to keep checking your BS levels after you gave birth. The biggest thing keeping me going through the last few weeks of this pregnancy is the bucket list of food I want to eat after I deliver. I have visions of me being rolled out of the operating room with a doughnut in my hand but realize this is probably a bit unrealistic. All my friends and family keep talking about all the chocolate etc they are going to bring to the hospital for me so if I have to follow the diet for a while after the delivery I would rather not have the temptation around me.

  • I was told I could resume my normal diet immediately after delivery. All postpartum GTTs have come back normal, and they didn't have me keep checking blood sugars after birth at all except for the GTTs at 6w PP and 1 year PP. The day after DD1 was born I had Chinese and Starbucks, both things I couldn't have while pregnant. After DD2 was born my mom stocked my cupboard with the pop tarts I was craving and couldn't have, LOL.

I did keep to the diet in spirit - balancing carbs with protein, more veggies and less carbs, etc., because it really is just a healthy way to eat. I am also at risk for Type 2 because my history and family history, so loosely following the diet has helped me loose some weight as I try to avoid developing Tyep 2.

  • I was told I could resume a normal diet immediately after giving birth. I will be retested (glucose test) at 6 weeks. Between delivery and retesting they want me to take my blood about once every three days. Either fasting or after a meal. Just to keep an eye on things.

Pretty much this except my endo will check my sugars and thyroid at 4 weeks pp. I was borderline hypothyroid after the birth of my son (very common pp btw), so we want to keep an eye on both issues.

  • Thanks ladies! I will pack some chocolate then :)
