Pregnant after 35

Just had 1st OBGYN appointment

It was great!  Im exactly 7 weeks and saw and heard the heartbeat today!
Is it normal for the doctor to scare the crap out of you because of your age?  Im 35 and this is my first pregnancy - after being so elated by hearing the heartbeat she then told me all the things that can go wrong.  I understand they have to do this but it made me completely feel scared again :)
I guess that feeling does not go away during pregnancy :)

  • I'm sorry your first appointment ended bad. That sucks. There are many things that can go during any pregnancy. Try to not worry and enjoy your pregnancy.

  • Eek, I don't really think it's the norm for a dr to take that approach! I'm sorry you had that experience. Take a deep breath and don't worry, you are so young compared to a lot of us ladies! Chances are everything will be just fine!

  • I'm sorry that your OB made what should have been a happy appt. all doom and gloom.  I am almost 10 years older than you, and have so far had a healthy pregnancy.  Take good care of yourself, be an educated healthcare consume.  Take a deep breath and try to enjoy the ride.

A agree with the other posters.  I have never been treated any differently than my younger counterparts (I have younger friends that use the same practice) the only difference was they explained the optional testing I could get if I chose to (Harmony blood test, NT scan, etc)  No scare tactics here thank God!

Don't worry it will all be ok.  And congrats on hearing the heartbeat and getting to see your baby.  Good stuff :)

  • Thank you so much for your support and reassuring words!

I was quite taken back by the discussion.  The doctor kept mentioning that this pregnancy is not like a pregnancy would have been in my 20's.  Furthermore, I mentioned to her that I don't feel my age as I'm extremely active and take care of myself and she simply laughed and said "yes you and every other woman in Manhattan feels this way".
Maybe its time to chose a different doctor :)
Again thanks for the encouraging words and positivity!  I love coming to these message boards - such a wonderful group of women!!
