Reading

Who reads to their LO? How often?
Do you attempt to show them the pictures?

My DH read to her while I was pregnant as a way to bond but we haven't continued since she was born. I always mean too but never get around to it. I know it's supposed to be good for their development.

We have failed at reading to her as much as I thought we would especially since we have a ton of books.  Once we get more of an established bedtime routine we will add reading a book in.  I would like to take her to the local library for children story time but most are for older kids.

  • I try to read at least one book a day to DD. She only tolerates short books, nothing more than 6-8 pages at this point before she loses interest. She will sit, listen and look at the pictures. Sometime she smiles at a color or shape she likes or the funny expressions I make when reading. They may not completely understand, but the benefits of reading to them are incredible. They pick up language skills, they learn to put words to scenarios, objects, animals, etc. Try to keep reading as much as possible!

We try to get in at least one book a day.  Usually we read to her at bedtime, but if she's too fussy then I try to read to her during the day after a feeding.  I'm trying to keep her sitting up for about 10-15 minutes after she eats to curb the spitting up, and if she's in a good mood I'll read her a book then.
  • Every time LO has awake time we read together. I always show her the pictures and sometimes she looks and some times she just listens. Now that she is older she will pay attention to the pictures and interact with smiles and coos at the story and the voices DH and I use.

I have a couple of those black and white baby books that I show him occasionally. I read a lot to DD (she's 3 1/2) and he's usually with me so he gets to listen too. :)

Reading is SO good for kids, regardless of their age.

  • My parents read to LO once or twice a day. I've yet to read to her. Dad keeps pushing me to read and play classical music for her but right now I don't have time to read to her during the day (they get her in the evenings before bed) and I hate listening to classical music.

  • I have read 2 novels to her so far. She sleeps a lot still, so it's more for my entertainment than hers at this point.
  • I intended to read more, but Lily and I have made it a few chapters into "The Little Princess".

That was one of my favorite books as a kid!
  • I try to read to her every day. If it's a long book, i will only read half because she tends to get fussy after a while. I usually prop her up or lay one the floor next to her so that I can show her the pictures.

Her books are packed up right now because we just moved so we have been reading a lot of Goodnight Moon since I have a copy in the diaper bag.

Mine too! I still have my copy from when I was a kid at my moms. It will be DD's when she's a little older.

  • I read to LO in the afternoon to put him down for a nap. We usually go through 2 books before he's falling asleep. I've been reading on my Kindle during MOTN feedings. If DS is fussy after nighttime feeding, I will read aloud my book till he falls asleep.
