weight gain at 24 weeks

Hey girls! So i went to the doctor today. I don't want to know the number of my weight but he said I have gained 10 pounds so far. Is that too much? I am 24 weeks tomorrow. I run every morning. I am trying not to freak out. I have had an eating disorder in the past and this is really hard. I still have 16 weeks to go :/

Re: weight gain at 24 weeks

  • Did your doctor have a problem with it?  If not, then don't concern yourself.

  • If your doctor wasn't worried, then there's no reason you should be.

I'm sure it's difficult seeing the scale creep upward when you've had an eating disorder in the past. Have you discussed that with your OB?

I have to say I think you are a little too preoccupied with this. You don't have many posts but about half of them are food/weight/eating related.

I agree.  I think you should only be concerned with something if your OB is as long as you trust them.  My Dr. also said that different body types will gain/distribute weight differently.
  • i have been. thank you for the replies. it feels better to talk about it to others
  • I was 145lbs now I m 162 lbs ..... I gained 10 lbs in 1 week at an all inclusive resort :p..... Worried nope ..... I m STM... I lost it before plus I like big babies :D at least 8.5 lbs
  • I remember you posting about this last month or so. I'm not sure where things have gone since this last post, but it appears you're still worried about weight gain and at this point in your pregnancy you really shouldn't be; it's normal and natural for everyone to gain at different rates. All that matters is that your baby is healthy and growing. If your doctor were concerned that it's too much or too little for you, they would've said so. Good luck to you.

  • She came here for advice regarding weight gain. Not all your mean responses about how many times or how often she posts about the same thing. Skip over the post if it bothers you. This is a board for people to discuss things, not to put people down when they post. I come here because I enjoy reading all the helpful posts, but I am reluctant to write many of my own posts for this very reason. Give the girl a break, guys.
  • Well how many times can you give the same advice to the same person?
  • Who really cares? Skip it.

I don't think anyone was mean, just stating facts and their opinion.
  • Alrighty then.
  • Definitely not too much!  I was told to put on 20-25.  I'm 23 weeks and I've put on about 12.  My doc said I was right on track.

  • Anywhoooo, I'm 24 weeks and I've gained 20 pounds! I went from 104 to 124, my doctors seem quite satisfied with my weight gain. I also had a severe eating disorder a few years back, I was diagnosed EDNOs for 5-6 years, I went to rehab once for it. I've been doing really well and was also scared of how my mind would react once I started gaining weight but surprisingly I'm loving it and saw a picture of me from October and was a little shocked to see how tiny I was, I never could see it first hand but I definitely don't want to go back to weighing 100 pounds. Just go with the flow, seek out someone in real life to speak with. A family member, friend, or counselor, someone who knows you or can really get into your head. Good luck.

  • I have read between 10-16 lbs at this point is good/normal assuming you had a healthy weight prior to pregnancy so you sound as if you are on the low side of healthy to me!

  • I've gained about 20 in 24 weeks so I definitely don't think your 10 lbs would be too much. If the doc doesn't bring up "too much/too little" then your doing good. On the other hand, since OP doesn't know her weight number only the amount she's gained - seems her and her doc do have an agreement with regards to the ED. Obviously she's not jumping on a scale every 5 mins so it sounds like she's doing her best not to obsess over it. And doc is helping by only advising the increase not the total weight. Don't worry OP some people have nothing to do but keep track of who posts what, how many times and where....personally I think that is weirder than worrying everything is ok during pregnancy
  • If your doctor isn't worried then why on earth are you.  You are over halfway through with this pregnancy and gained 10 lbs.  Why on earth are you worried?  That's like me posting that I'm worried because I am 23 weeks pregnant and gained 6 lbs.  Nope I'm not.  I wouldn't be worried if I gained 26.  I am pregnant!  Quit stressing over it seriously.

  • I gained 7lbs in 24 weeks, but I was overweight before getting pregnant. The smaller you are before getting pregnant, the more weight you will be expected to gain. Everyone gains weight differently. As long as you are eating healthy, drinking water and staying active, you have nothing to worry about.

I was up about 10lbs at my 24 week appointment and my blood pressure was great. My doctor gave me a high five and said I was doing well, lol.

I understand where you're coming from. It sounds like speaking to a counselor might help ease your anxiety.

  • Here's something that really opened my eyes about weight gain during pregnancy. According to What to Expect When Expecting, p 168 it says that by the end of a pregnancy women gain (approximately) the following amount due to:

    baby 7.5 pounds

    Placenta 1.5 pounds

    Amniotic Fluid 2 pounds

    Uterine Enlargement 2 pounds

    Maternal Breast tissue 2 pounds

    Maternal Blood Volume 4 pounds

Fluids in Maternal Tissue 4 pounds

    Maternal Fat Stores 7 pounds

    = 30 pounds

Of course, everyone is different but it amazes me how much weight is gained just through extra tissue and fluid that is needed for a healthy baby.

If you'd had an eating disorder in the past and have shown improvement, trust yourself that you know how to properly deal with the mental struggles that you are experiencing during pregnancy. Continue to talk to your doctor and therapist. Good luck and remember a healthy baby and mom is the goal.
