Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Is no naps ok?

My 3-month old son is sleeping wonderfully at night, usually 7-9 hours, then a meal, then back to sleep for another 2-3 hours.  The problem is during the day he doesn't really take any naps, usually two 30-minute naps is the most I'll get from him...except when he falls asleep either in my arms or nursing, then he'll sleep great for a long time.  When I try to put him down after I think he's good and asleep, he'll wake up within 5 minutes.  And if I try to put him down when he looks drowsy and ready for a nap, he'll immediately wake up and cry then too. I want him to be able to take naps on his own, and I'm going back to work next week so I don't want the daycare ladies to have to hold him all the time to get him to sleep.  Also I've read that babies this age generally take 2-3 hour long naps per day, and this never happens for him.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • Daycare teachers are great at transitioning kids. I would enjoy your snuggle time now and not worry about it too much.

The daycare teachers won't have time to hold him while sleeping so he will get better at sleeping I bet..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • At 3 months my DD was still napping in her swing.  Actually still does sometimes if I'm having a hard time getting her to nap.  Sometimes her naps are 2 hours and sometimes they are 30 minutes....totally varies but she still naps every 2 hours during the day.

My LO takes shorter naps on occasion. I've found that running a fan for background noise and closing the blinds half-way works for her. In addition, I like to put on some classical music - also a good excuse for me not to watch as much TV! A win for both of us. :)
  • Until I did sleep training with DD#1 she only slept 30min naps....and daycare did rocker her and hold her longer when they could. I didn't sleep train till 9 months and only then did her naps get longer.
DD#2 only takes 30 min naps unless held or in bed with me as well.

  • Naps at that age are a must. Ditto pp about the daycare people. I used the swing for naps until baby was 5-6 mo or so. Then I transitioned into crib.
