I prefer Benjamin. I think Benny is great for a kid and Ben is a solid adult name. I don't love the more common NNs for William (i.e. Bill/Billy and Will). Since I've never heard of Liam for William and don't find it to be a naturally derived NN, although I may be in the minority with that opinion. I do however like Liam as a stand-alone name.
I think both are good, though I don't know about either nn. Generally, I'm not a fan of nn. Why pick a name if you're just going to call your kid something else?
I love the name Liam, so William is my pick. Benjamin is awesome too, though -- I think Benny would be adorable for a little boy. William and Benjamin are both really excellent choices. Good luck picking, you might have a hard time since they're both so great!
I love Liam used for William. We didn't do this because we have another William in the family. Having said that, Ben is a little less used in our area so it seems more fresh. You really can't go wrong.
I was ready to say Benjamin and then I read your last name starts with a B. I also am wary of alliteration. I do love William, but prefer using the full name or Will to Liam. Liam's trendiness is NMS
