sparking and flaming pears???

I cut up some pear (no peel) and put it in the microwave for 15 seconds to soften before giving to DD for finger food... it started sparking and there was actually a flame coming from a few little pieces! I obviously stopped the microwave and checked for anything metal... there was none, just pears - i tried again and same thing - and it smelt burnt... I threw away and did not give her any but this is a huge mystery to me??? They were just regular organic pears.... any ideas?

  • I have no idea but the same thing happened w/ some sweet potatos I had. I had baked them, cut them, froze them, and was putting in the mocrowave to thaw. It started to smell like it was burning and when I looked it was sparking. What's up with the flaming produce?

  • Were they frozen? Some fruits have ice crystals that cause that. I googled! Apparently, it happens a lot with berries.
  • I don't know either. We have some smart ladies on this board, maybe there's a microwave specialist on the board that can help out?????

Mine were, I froze them in an ice cube tray then threw them in to thaw. That's what I thought at first too but there weren't any crystals like from freezer burn. Maybe inside the potato there was some crystal somewhere. Who knew?

  • I might suggest checking the bowl or plate you had the fruit on. I once put a coffee mug in the microwave, and it did that. Turns out the coffee mug hag some metal in the design and was not microwavable.

I've done that before too. These potatos were in a plastic dish. There probably was an ice crystal somewhere like lanie said.

  • Apparently some fruits just have sugar or ice crystal that spark.

Flames I'd be concerned about but overall, normal. :)

nope - thought of that too! These are regular ceramic plates we use in the microwave all the time for years with no problem..

From what it said, I am going to guess that you may have left a little bit of skin on  a piece of the pear, and/or you had too little fruit in for too long.
