The post below made me think of this.
At the hospital where I gave birth to both my girls, they did away with having a human come and take the babies pictures. Instead, they gave us a postcard with a special code on it. Then we were instructed to walk the baby down in their bassinet to a special waiting room. There was a big machine in the room and you pushed your baby under it, put in your code and it took the pictures for you. I thought this was really weird but our nurse told us that all the hospitals are doing it that way now. She's full of crap right?

Mine did for both of my DC's.
mine didn't have a photographer. they had a service set up where you could load your own digital pic into a machine (like the thing at cvs where you design your own albums) and it created a photo announcement you could email from there.
i didn't do it though...i was too focused on trying to get my extended family out of my room so i could try to enjoy my brand new baby. i wasn't very successful at getting them to leave or getting good pics!
We had real photographers. We actually have a couple that come in and take pictures immediately after delivery, during the first bath, etc, then make a DVD (free) and give it to you. We also have a person who takes their newborn picture that you can order and they put it on their website.
That's how ours did it too. The pictures were awful, so we didn;t order any.

My hospital had cameras at the nurses station that you could check out and use to take pictures of the baby. Then they gave you a disc and you could upload them to a photo website to email to friends to announce the baby's arrival. You could also have them printed in various packages.
We just used our own camera and took our own pictures. I think in the age of digital cameras and all of the technology we have now, that having actual photographers is unnecessary.
A photographer person went from room to room asking if we wanted pics. We didn't do it because I brought my camera with me (and was realllly tired and didn't want to be bothered right then).
Christmas 2011
With Hailey, there was a real person
With Nathan, they had what u are describing
Person.
She was sweet, and very good with the baby. Bebe wouldn't open her eyes, and she patiently had her suck on a gloved finger until she did open them. She took 12 shots to make sure we had decent ones to choose from.
We also had a person 2 years ago with DS (same hospital).
