Breastfed for 20 minutes today!

I swear my son knows just how much frustration he can cause before he does something well. He took 5 ml from a bottle on Sunday-YAY! On Monday he breastfed for 7-ish minutes with no problems-Yay again. Then yesterday, both times we tried breastfeeding he desatted and brady-ed. This morning didn't go much better. For his noon feed the speech therapist was there again and we tried the bottle. He brady-ed. But then he had a really good couple of moments. After 3 ml he was tired out. A little later his doctor came in and started talking about a G-tube again. She's thinking maybe his lungs will develop faster if we were only focusing on that and not on feeding and breathing. But she's willing to give it till next week. I was getting pretty discouraged when he brady-ed after a minute of breastfeeding for his 4 pm feed. Once he recovered though he nursed for about 10 minutes. I burped him, switched sides and he nursed for another 10 and the NP said not to supplement him with a partial gavage feed! I will call in a little while and find out if he lasted until his 8 pm feed or if he got hungry early. I really hope he starts doing better with breastfeeding and that it's not really holding him back on the breathing side of things. He's 12 weeks old today and still on about 50% O2 at 6 liters. He gets put on 500 ml or less for while he's breastfeeding and does fine, but too long on the low flow wears him out.

  • Yup, he's a wimpy white boy for sure. On the bright side, he must've gotten plenty of milk during his 4 pm feed cuz he slept till his 8. Either that or he was so tired he didn't care that he was hungry.....
