Clomid days 3-7 vs. 5-9

Does anyone know why some people do one over the other?

I am switching from 50mg to 100mg but my dilemma is that DH is OOT Mon-Fri. next week  - that will be CD 7-10.  Will the bump to 100 make me O earlier? I O on my own - just weak, I normally O on clomid anywhere from day 12-16.

Is there any harm in taking clomid day 4-8 instead of 3-7?  I just really don't want my DH to be gone when I peak.

I'm sorry for the rambling!

Re: Clomid days 3-7 vs. 5-9

  • I always took is 5-9, there was never really another option.  I think because Clomid normally thins your lining, they do 5-9 to make sure you don't ovulate too soon....and then couldn't support a pregnancy if one was to occur.  One or two days either way would probably switch ovulation by that many days, but I'm not positive.

  • I also always ovulated on my own.  When I took Clomid it was always days 5-9.  I had heard that if you don't ovulate on your own they may put on it days 3-7 and that days 5-9 were to strengthen ovulation and help with the luteal phase.  After taking Clomid, I never had a LP shorter than 14 days.  Before Clomid, I had a few as short as 10 or 12 days.

Even taking it days 5-9, I usually ovulated on cd14.  We only did Clomid with timed intercourse and our instructions were to start on cd 10 and keep going every other day until ovulation was confirmed.  (Either with charting or OPKs)

    HTH!  Good luck!

  • I'm not sure why but I have always taken clomid/femara days 3-7 and I ovulate regularly on my own.

  • According to my RE, the days you taken on are based purely on dr. preference or "tradition". I did both 3-7 and 5-9, and ovulated on different days, usually somewhere around CD12-15.

I don't know if upping your dosage will make you ovulate earlier. Good luck, though.

  • On my first two rounds of clomid, I took it days 3 - 7. ?I didn't end up ovulating until late in my cycle (around day 18 or so). ?So on the next rounds my RE moved up the clomid to days 2-6. ?I don't think changing the days you take it will have any significant effect., other than maybe make you ovulate a day or two earlier. ??
  • My doctor picks between 3-7 and 5-9 based loosely off of trying to avoid the weekend for the ultrasound/timing of the trigger.  Although this round he did 5-9 and we did the ultrasound Saturday morning.  I ended up having to go back this morning for a followup though.
