Ear piercing for DD

If you are or did get DD's ears pierced how old was she/will she be? Where did you/will you get it done (Clair's, Icing, Walmart...)?

I'm thinking about getting DD's done around 3 months, does that sound about right? Not sure where to get it done though

Thanks!

  • Oh boy...

IMO, I wouldn't do it for an infant....however if I was, I am surely not going to take a baby to Claires!  That young you should see if your pedi does it.

  • I'm not trying to start an argument here but I know there are a bunch of you ladies that do want to get DD's ears pierced like me.

    "Babies are not for bedazzling"

  • I believ ethi sis a "hot topic", but I am thinking about doing it at her 4 month appt which is on the 17th of this month.  Figured, she is getting a bunch of shots, what's 1 more?! :)
  • I'm prochoice on ear piercing. I'll let my kids decide for themselves.
  • I had picked up information on ear piercing when I didn;t know I was having a boy. They woman I spoke to said that they don;t do piercings on any baby under 2 mos. If I did have a girl she would have had her ears pierce not long after the 2 month mark.

  • Maybe wait until she's one?

Sorry, I just dont see the point at 3 months.

  • Honestly, I wasn't trying to start an argument, just wanted you to steer clear of Claires or somewhere like that.  I would rather a pedi do it where there is much LESS risk of infection.  That's all....

I know there are many people that have this done and that's your choice.

  • As someone who got an infection from getting her ears pierced at the mall (I was 7 years old), please consider having it done at the doctors if you are going to do it at all.

  • We do not cosmetically alter our children.  If she wants her ears pierced later in life we will allow her to do it then but not until she can have a say.
  • I agree with taking her to the doctor to have it done.
  • I had DD's ears pierced 2 days before she turned 4 months old.  I did not see anything wrong with it.  The place I went to said that they will not pierce the ears until the baby is at least 2 months old and had their first set of shots already.

  • FYI - I would not even consider taking my baby to Wal-Mart or Claire's because most of the time there are children working in those stores.  You do not want just anybody putting a hole in your baby's ear.  I went to a place at the hospital I delivered at.

  • If you want to get it done, let the pedi do it.
  • I will let her get them pierced when she wants to but i am undecided about getting them done for her.  my pedi does them in the office so if i get it done it will be done there, i feel more comfortable with that then like a kiosk in the mall.
  • No tuntil she's old enough to want them and can take care of them herself.  to me it's a rite of passage and part of growing up and making their own decisions

  • As someone that has many tattoos and had many piercings. I would go to your local tattoo parol and seek out the piercer. ?See if they would be willing to do it. Stands in the mall are full of inexperienced piercers, and not to mention your little one is way more prone to infection because of the non-steril environment or lack of cleanliness. Seriously how clean can a store in the mall be? I wouldn't do it to my own DD, but if you do at least just go and have a chat at your local tattoo parlor.

    Amen!

  • i know it is a totally controversial subject...and don't know why.  my mom did mine at 4 months and I never messed with them b/c I thought I was born with them!!!  my pedi doesn't like it, but his nurse had her daughters done and said it was fine after their first set of shots.  I think we are going to do DD's at 4 months...but I wish I could find a pedi office to do it....claire's and stores scare me....
  • Just dont let anyone use a gun on her to do them. USE A NEEDLE!
  • Regardless of age, I would get the doc to do it, it's a simple procedure, but in untrained hands, with possibly dirty equipment...

That said, I will let DD tell me when she wants her ears pierced. I think it would be a fun thing for her at 5-7 years old when she'll know how to take care of her ears and not tug on the earing. I also get the getting it done early - plenty of cultures do. Nothing wrong with it - personal choice on how you raise your little one.

  • we got DS done the same time we got his tattoo...
  • Walmart ... definitely Walmart.

  • well. i wouldn't even get my own ears pierced at claire's or walmart or anywhere like that.  if you are set on doing it, go to the pedi...

  • I don't agree with it, I think she should have a say in it.  I mean they are HER ears not yours.

If you really want to get them done, have her pedi do them.

  • I don't plan on piercing Abby's ears, but if you do it you should NOT go to a mall place to have it done.I used to work at Claire's. The "piercers" there are not all that well-trained. I wouldn't let Claire's (or similar places) put an earring in my teddy bear, never mind a human baby.

I second the poster who said go to a tattoo/piercing place. They are probably better equipped to do it than your pedi.

Our doctors don't pierce ears here, and certainly not pedi's - they are considered specialists and you have to be referred to see one for issues more serious than your GP can deal with. They would look at me like I grew a second head if I asked them to pierce her ears...haha

  • I also worked at Claire's in high school and would NEVER take my DD there. There is no training (besides a teddy bear) and piercing baby ears is WAY different than doing an adults. You have to pierce in an exact spot so that when the baby's ears grow the earrings are in the right spot (usually they are off).

Use stick-ons until she is old enough to ask for them

  • I refuse to read the replies to this question, so I apologize if this has been answered.  My guess is that all of the replies are flames and none actually answer your question, so here's an actual reply: Babies need to have their 2nd set of shots before they get their ears pierced, so 3 months is a bit too early.  After 4 months it should be fine.  I will be getting Kyra's done at Clair's around 4-6 months since her pedi doesn't do it.  Because I think my baby is for bedazzling.
  • I plan on doing what my Mom did with me.  Waiting until DD's 13th birthday and only if she wants it done. I think the child should have a say.  FWIW, my BFF had her's done when she was a baby and the holes are too far up on the lobe and she can't wear small hoop earrings because her lobe gets in the way.  She wishes her Mom had waited until her ears had matured/grew a little more.
