Hello all - so sorry I fell off the face of the earth and little someone fell into my arms! Thanks for the well wishes and kind thoughts. Here's our story - a short version and a long long one - and some pics of course. Our sweet Tilly will already be 2 weeks old tomorrow!
Our Birth Story - short and sweet:Matilda Mary D was born at 40w3d and arrived at 10:43pm on Wednesday, February 19th, 2014 via semi-emergency c-section due to her not tolerating labor well and my spiking a fever. She was 7lbs 8oz and 19.75 inches long, with a head of dark brown hair.
She was born a strong girl and scored an 8 on her APGARs. We both recovered from the fever immediately after birth. She spent 48 hours in the NICU receiving antibiotics, as a guard against my fever and I also received antibiotics during that time.
We all went home together on Sunday, February 23rd.
WAY way Longer: Our EDD was 2/16/14. I had been progressing during my cervical checks, losing multiple mucus plugs daily (seriously, where WAS all this stuff?), and having some menstrual type cramps and backaches of and on for a week or so. Our OB didn’t want us to get to 41w due to my age, and our struggles to get to this baby, so we’d talked about doing an induction on 2/21 if the baby wasn’t here by then.
On Wednesday (2/19/14) (three days post EDD) I met my parents for lunch and when I got up to greet them I felt more than a trickle (but less than a gush) of fluid in my undercarriage. I thought it seemed strange and new but when I went to the bathroom it looked more like really watery mucus and not what I imagined amniotic fluid to look like, so I shrugged it off as something that was part of the end of pregnancy, having read stories of women going in and being sent home. However... it kept happening! Little trickles and gushes all afternoon. I called my OB’s office around 3:30pm because I finally suspected that my water had broken. They confirmed it was their suspicion too and it was time to head to the hospital. I called Mister D, who was at work, to come home and get our gear packed into the car.
I started to have some light contractions as I finished packing our daily items, but I didn’t think they were timeable as my backache never let up and my cramps seemed to come and go without a pattern.
We arrived at 6:30pm. We got checked in and our nurse checked to see that my water had broken, she confirmed it but needed the lab to confirm. She took my blood pressure and it was a bit high for me, she also took my temp which was normal, but I am usually on the cooler side of normal. She set up external monitors for contractions and the baby.
We got set up in our room. Confirmed that my water broke. I sent texts to my family and close friends. She set up an IV for antibiotics (I was GBS+) and the monitoring continued. Contractions were happening about every 5 minutes. They were manageable at this point. She was concerned about the baby’s high heart rate (170s) so she had me change positions from side to side (ending up on my right) and also did a saline flush through my IV which seemed to help the baby, temporarily.
Unfortunately my fever rose every time she checked. After being on antibiotics for the required time, she checked my cervix and declared that I was less progressed than my OB had thought and said it would be most definitely Thursday or Friday until the baby was here.
A bit later my fever jumped even more and the baby’s heart rate was high once again and was not tolerating contractions well. They had me use an oxygen mask to get the baby more oxygen, which was fine but felt suddenly claustrophobic for me and limited me. Now I was in bed, on my right side, with an IV and holding/wearing the oxygen mask as well as the monitors.
She called our on call OB who said to start Pitocin to jump start labor to get baby here sooner, with less stress and that she was on her way. Our nurse did just that and the contractions ramped up significantly. I immediately threw up, massively. The contractions were very strong but I was breathing through them well but the oxygen mask and throwing up didn’t mesh well, as one might imagine, re-breathing in vomit-mouth was not awesome. I was also told to lay only on my right side which made any movement for management of the pain difficult and impossible. Moving around was not an option now with the baby’s heart rate needing to stay stable with me on my right, my IV and the oxygen mask.
The nurse called the doctor again, when I was throwing up and the oxygen was no longer helping our bean very much and my fever was 102.5. Our OB arrived and said to prep for a c-section, especially after all we’d been through to get to this point, she didn’t want to push it.
I was totally 1000% cool with that. I speed agreed through my contractions, to all the risks and warnings “your bowels could be lacerated, you could wind up uterus-less, we might take your vag entirely” Yep. Yep. Yep. Cool. Do it.
I was truly not worried or scared. I just wanted our baby safe. Doc said the whole thing from start to finish would take an hour. OKAY. Let’s roll.
I kissed Mister D as they wheeled me into the OR and prepped me for the spinal. I had no time to think about it being painful and it wasn’t. The hardest part was staying still. My fever was so high and I had the chills so badly, my OB and a tech held me tight. The anesthesiologist was great and got it in very quickly and correctly. When the spinal set in I started shivering uncontrollably and my teeth chattered so much that I couldn’t talk (which happened during many of my egg retrievals and/or surgeries). They strapped me down, Jesus style, onto the table. My hands also started to cramp up into useless lobster-boy appendages. I’d had that happen before too. Such a strange feeling and equally so strange looking!
We’d left our room at 10:20 and Mister D joined us around 10:35 or so. He sat by my head and talked reassuringly to me. He said I was pretty chill and matter of fact and didn’t seem rattled.
Our bean was born at 10:43, they asked Mister D to stand up and call it. And he did. He said, “It’s Matilda Mary!” and we both wept and wept. He said how beautiful she was and we heard her cry. He took some AMAZING shots with our good camera.
I told him to go to her and be with her.
She came out strong and scored an 8 on her APGAR. The cause of my fever was unknown, suspected Chorioamnionitis, so she had to spend 48 hours in the NICU receiving antibiotics but was otherwise robust and healthy. I got to hold and kiss her briefly in the OR but I was shaking/shivering/hand cramping so badly from the anesthesia, I couldn’t do much else. My lame lobster hands tried to pet her and console her but it was really hard. She went with Mister D to the NICU while they stitched and cleaned me up - that part took the longest and was sort of lonely. When I asked, one of the nurses or techs was nice enough to hold my hand until the surgery was done.
Mister D went to the NICU and watched her get an IV. He was so in love with her and so smitten immediately, he kept coming to tell me little reports. My spinal wasn’t wearing off fast enough so he had to feed her and we chose donor milk over formula (so thankful for donors!) and he also changed her first diaper. I was proud of him and so happy that he jumped into his role immediately, not that I expected differently but the whole thing happened so quickly - I don’t know that he was mentally prepared to just do it, but he did and he did an incredible job!
I needed 48 hours of antibiotics to guard against my fever but could go up to see her once my spinal had worn off. Somehow my fever receded immediately after her birth, so the docs were unsure as to why it happened, some “people spike fevers” they said. At 5am I finally went up to see her, hold her for real, and have some skin-to-skin time to breastfeed her. SO IN LOVE! It was a bit weird to maneuver through our IVs and her monitoring cords, but we got it figured out and we got it to work perfectly! I couldn’t believe it. It was so moving I couldn’t believe my body and her body were cooperating. She’s been a great eater since then.
She came to be roomies with us on Friday, mid-day and everything went amazingly well. We were released on Sunday the 23rd and it’s been nice to be home with her.
She’s such a good baby and we’ve really lucked out. She’s mellow but not boring, she sleeps well, eats well and is a snuggler but doesn’t need to always be held. We’re SO in love. So utterly in love with her.
It sounds impossible but really, truly, if I knew that she would be the result, I would go through everything we did, all these 4 years of hoping and heartbreak, to get her here again, in a heartbeat.
I can’t believe that I’m a mother and I love her SO much.
And now photos:
