  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Pretty darn good! DS seems to be doing fine with eggs and wheat. We even had french toast for breakfast yesterday! I'm pretty sure I ate some soy oil on Thursday and haven't seen any affect on DS. Maybe next weekend I'll try giving him soy directly. I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!!

    2. Since we have several wheat/gluten-free MSPI mamas right now, let's share some recipes they can enjoy! I don't have a recipe to link to but I can describe our dinner last night. I made mushroom-asparagus quinoa and a side of white beans. I cooked the quinoa separately while I sauteed the mushrooms with onions and garlic, then threw in the asparagus at the end just to lightly cook. Mixed it all together when done and salted to taste. I'd cooked a big batch of white beans in the crock pot so I took some of those out and mashed them up with some turkey stock. A yummy and filling dinner that we all enjoyed. Could easily be vegan without the turkey stock!

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not today!

  • 1. We are doing great! DD has finally cleared her cold (I hope!) so we can get a better idea on if the mucous in her diapers is from my diet. I had cut out peanuts and tree nuts 1 week ago (I eat a LOT of peanut butter) and she has had 2 normal diapers in a row! I'm hopeful that it continues...
    2. I can have wheat, but my mother had eliminated it for awhile a few years ago. No real recipes from her, but she did strongly recommend rice pasta as a substitute.
    3. No questions today :)

I really like the Tinkyada brand brown rice pasta and Ancient Harvest quinoa pasta. Other rice pastas I've tried have had a weird texture, same with corn pastas.
  • Possibly MSPI here. Does anyone mind if I ask a few questions?
    1.)what made you suspect MSPI?
2.)how long before you could see improvement?
3.)is it possible to have only a milk intolerance and not soy also?

My LO symptoms: occasional green poop, more mucus in poop than not, fussy for no apparent reason only thing that makes her happy is nursing even if she just ate(at which point she usually just nurses to sleep), very gasy, trouble/pain pooping but not constipated. Poop is often very runny. Thanks so much! Going to start cutting out foods right away.

@chemily8 I suspected MSPI when DS suddenly had green poop. He went from having normal, yellow, seedy poop to green, mucousy, sometimes frothy poop. I did have an oversupply but correcting that didn't help. I went to see his pedi and she tested for viruses but suggested I cut out dairy because it was most likely a dairy intolerance. It is possible to have MPI only.

If dairy is the issue, and you cut out all dairy, even hidden, from your diet, symptoms should clear up in 3 to 5 weeks. Some mamas notice an immediate improvement and then a "relapse" after a few days, but it can take several weeks for the proteins to completely clear out of both of your systems. If you don't notice an improvement after 5 weeks, cut out soy also.

Do you have an oversupply/forceful letdown? That can cause similar symptoms to MSPI.

Please see the last check-in for links to lists of ingredients that can have hidden dairy or soy: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/comment/79754417#Comment_79754417

HTH and GL! We are here if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much! No OS/OAL. Going to begin with the dairy! Yikes!

  • Hey everyone! That's so great that your LO is starting to be able to tolerate more foods, @rocknrollfriend! I must have accidentally eaten some dairy last week because on Thursday he had some blood in his stool. But it cleared up pretty quickly. Other than that he's doing fine. But we definitely won't be purposely putting dairy back in my diet any time soon. I think maybe around 6 months we'll try it.

hmm... gluten free. I'm not gluten free, but some snacks that I enjoy are hummus, salsa, and guacamole. I think all of those are gluten free? Sorry, ladies. I'm not much help in that respect. Have you tried pinterest? I get a lot of recipes from pinterest. For a side you could do a greek salad without the feta (which bums me out, but it is what it is! haha!). Just chop up some veggies and whip up a quick greek vinaigrette. Hmm... Apples & peanut butter. Hard cooked eggs. I don't know. I'm just listing things now haha!

    No questions.

  • This is my first time participating. Thank you for having this check in!

    1. We are doing okay. For some reason I feel so rude asking people about ingredients. I know this was talked about last week, but it's so frustrating dealing with dietary restrictions and food NOT cooked by you. LO's eczema looks a bit better on his face but his belly and legs have been looking pretty angry. I'm still waiting to see normal poops and clear skin since I've been totally dairy and soy free for 3 weeks. I posted a couple of days ago and received advice from @rocknrollfriend to maybe cut something else out. I eat eggs, wheat, and peanuts almost every day. I'm thinking maybe I'll try one at a time. Do these allergens take as long as dairy and soy to leave your system?

    2. I like to make my own coconut milk, which leaves you with really great coconut flour. You can use this as a good flour sub for baking. Wellness mama has great gluten, dairy, and soy free recipes. I really like these muffins https://www.wellnessmama.com/2637M/grain-free-banana-bread-and-muffins/
Reading her site started my love affair with coconut oil. Mmmmmm

    3. I guess the only question I have is about the amount of time it takes for the other foods to leave your system.
Oh! I just thought of one! We are starting solids (LO is 5 1/2 months)--avocado and sweet potato at the moment. Should I wait to give him solids until his symptoms are gone? Just bc they might do weird things to his poop. Gosh I feel like I overthink these things.
  • 1. We're alright. Not great, but things have been worse, too. DS has been having some mild flare-ups in his symptoms even though I've been really diligent about dairy and soy. I'm not sure whether I should start to work my way through the rest of the top 8 or just go ahead and do a full-blown elimination diet for a while.

I guess I'm dragging my feet because I'm struggling so much with getting enough calories throughout the day--I've been losing anywhere from three to five pounds a week since Christmas. It hasn't affected my supply yet (I'm guessing because I still have fat stores left for my body to raid from?), but I don't know how long that's going to be true. So the thought of cutting out so much more from my diet is kind of intimidating right now. I need to sit down and plan out some large-batch meal plans so I can have a day or two of cooking meals that I can freeze, or something.

    2. One of my favorite meals is hummus-crusted chicken (clicky). It's good with the squash as listed in the recipe, but I've also made it with brussel sprouts, or broccoli, or carrots... I guess you can't go wrong with roasted veggies in general, though.

    3. Any advice on elimination diets? Is it worth it, if he's not completely miserable? I've been trying to read up on it, but it's seriously intimidating me.

    2. Since we have several wheat/gluten-free MSPI mamas right now, let's share some recipes they can enjoy! One of my favorite go to sites when I first started the gf diet was glutenfreeda.com.  There are recipes that are gluten and casein free though not necessarily soy free.

  • Hi ladies,

Just began eliminating dairy this week as per my pediatrician she said milk and soy but I started with milk. LO seems less fussy but poop is still like water. My burning question is where do you get your recipes/meal/snack ideas. All I've been eating is peanut butter but that can cause issues too...

I get most of mine from pinterest. If you're just avoiding dairy and soy, most recipes classified as paleo are safe, so that's a lot of what I use.

Other than that, my eating is pretty formulaic these days. Breakfast is oatmeal. Lunch is usually leftovers. Dinner is almost always some kind of roasted veggies with either chicken or fish.

  • @caleyton3 I think other proteins do take about as long as milk and soy to leave your system. When we went to see the pedi GE and she suggested I cut out wheat, she gave me about a month to do that and look for improvement in his symptoms.

Solids poop definitely muddles things up! With sweet potato especially, suddenly his poops will be orange instead of green (if they still are). As long as he's still nursing well, there's no reason you can't hold off on the solids for a bit. I know it's a fun new milestone, though. :)

@lovelainie If I were you, I would try eliminating one of the Top 8 you eat a lot of, rather than a TED. I say this because you are having trouble getting all the calories you need already, and with a TED it will be even harder. You might also consider seeing a dietician to help you ensure you're getting enough calories. I struggled a lot with weight loss too. I never did see a dietician but I'm sure it would have helped. I didn't stop losing weight until I started eating dairy and wheat again. Meal planning can definitely help. It takes time but it might be worth it for you. GL!

@a&j111006 mspimama.com has some good recipes. We talk about food a lot in our check ins, and all our previous posts are archived on our blog, mspimoms.blogspot.com. HTH!

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?  I am doing well.  I am adjusting to the wheat free part.  I need to start eating a bit better though.  I have been sustaining on potato chips and these amazing chocolate bars I found at WF.  LO is good.  The last set of guaiac tests came back pretty good.  The last day of testing there was just a trace amount of blood.

    2. Since we have several wheat/gluten-free MSPI mamas right now, let's share some recipes they can enjoy!  I make a pot roast in the crock pot.  I just put in a roast, onion, beef broth, potatoes and carrots.

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?  None today!

  • Oh and for those who are just milk and soy I used this list with DD1 in the beginning.

No. They are often in the dairy section of grocery stores but they are not dairy. They are one of the other Top 8 allergens, though.
  • I just posted earlier we were fine, and then two poops in a row we have blood again. This is so frustrating.  I have a call in to the pedi to see what I need to eliminate next.
  • @camedowncrushing Oh, boo, that sucks. I can't remember, how long have you been wheat-free?
  • @camedowncrushing Oh, boo, that sucks. I can't remember, how long have you been wheat-free?

Hmm, maybe give it another week or two before cutting anything else out. Fingers crossed for you!

I am going to see about making an appt with a GI specialist.  I am really getting frustrated.
  • Ugh I hope all you mamas who are struggling find a solution that works for you and baby. So much admiration for your sacrifices!

My SO thinks that LO doesn't have a food intolerance and that I should just give up eliminating things altogether. Mostly he thinks this because for baby Ambrose it's just skin and abnormal poop problems, no trouble pooping, not gassy or fussy, etc. Personally, I want what's best for baby even if he doesn't have extreme symptoms.

Is it possible that my particular LO just has very sensitive skin and green poop as his norm, and it's NOT a food intolerance? I really don't mind having a special diet. The hardest thing for me about it is when other ppl need to be involved, ie eating dinner at a relatives or out at a restaurant. I hate being an inconvenience to people. Sorry for the novel. I always seem to write too much.
  • @camedowncrushing I know how frustrating it is, I really do. Hang in there!

@caleyton3 Honestly, it sounds to me like your LO has a food allergy or intolerance. Consistent green poop is NOT normal, and neither is excema (and isn't it uncomfortable for baby? I don't know since I've never experienced it). I know it's hard to deal with the diet when it comes to eating out or at other people's homes (I hate being an inconvenience too), but in this case you have to do what is best for your LO. That sucks that your SO is not supportive of the diet changes. It makes it really hard when you don't have supportive people around you. We are here whenever you need us! Keep at it and maybe when SO sees LO improve, he'll come around. GL!

  • Thanks @rocknrollfriend, that is how I feel as well. It's nice to hear it from someone else other than me. I hear all the haters hate and started to question myself and my instincts!
  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? I'm fine. I think his two year molars are making their way down. He is crying again at night :(

    2. Since we have several wheat/gluten-free MSPI mamas right now, let's share some recipes they can enjoy! I'm not much if a cook, like a pp said my gluten free meals are grilled chicken or fish with veggies. I know - boring.

Your DH might also feel guilty, and just is hoping it is something else.  With DD1 DH would ask me ALL THE TIME about reintroducing because he kept saying I was killing myself with the diet.I would assure him that I was fine, but I think he felt bad eating pizza and good stuff in front of me. He would always say to me that I could just try a little, and the baby would be fine.  It sometimes made me feel like I was being a little crazy...like maybe I was going overboard by being so strict.  I stuck with it though, and kept telling him no. This time around he is being so much more supportive. I don't know what made the difference this time...maybe because he went through it before, and knows there is an end in sight.  This time he is always offering to go to WF for me or chipolte to get dinner.  It is really nice.

Hmmm....I assumed so because DD1 was fine with soy oil and lecithin because there wasn't any protein. Does your DD react to lecithin as well?
I just looked at the chipotle website though, and it shows that they only use the soy oil in their soft tortillas which I am not eating since they have wheat as well.  Everything else I am eating should be even soy oil free according to their site.  I ate Chipotle last night, and I am keeping a food diary so I will see if there is a correlation.  I haven't been avoiding it though (oil or lecithin because I read it was very rare for a reaction) so it might be something I need to do.
I have an appt with a GI specialist for next week.  My pedi called today, and told me to stop eating eggs.

DH still does the "just a little bit" thing sometimes. It is SO ANNOYING!
  • @Charlie1178 Welcome! I will definitely be trying that recipe, I love my crock pot! Yes, the diet does get easier. Really, it does. It will still be hard, but easier. For a long, long time I was avoiding all dairy, soy, eggs, peanuts, and wheat, along with cabbage and coconut milk. We definitely got into ruts. Lots of roasted chicken and veggies for dinner, almost daily avocados and tortilla chips, oatmeal for every breakfast. But gradually, I started to sort of enjoy the challenge. I eat a lot of new things I never would have tried otherwise, and I like that we now make most of our food from scratch. I think we are all healthier for it. Now that I can eat more of what I used to avoid, we largely eat the same way we have been for the last year or so. I don't like cheese or milk very much anymore, and I don't want to eat all wheat products, I like the variety of other grains. Everything about being a new mom is so overwhelming, especially in the beginning, and to throw a TED on top of it is super stressful, I'm sure. Hopefully you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. "This is not forever!" was my mantra for those early months. Hang in there, and we're here when you need us!

p.s. The last few check-ins we've been sharing some wheat-free MSPI friendly recipes. We've also done some recipe exchanges aiming to avoid most or all of the Top 8 allergens. You can check out all our posts on our blog, mspimoms.blogspot.com. The Food Allergy board might be a good resource for you to. GL!

  • p.s. Some kids are more sensitive than others and can't tolerate soy oil or lecithin. My DS reacts to both.
I am going to look through my cabinets to see if I have been eating any.  I really haven't been eating many processed foods though.
  • rocknrollfriend
what kind of oatmeal do you eat?
  • @shanbp I think I would just eat the goat cheese myself rather than give it to your LO, just because 4 mo seems so little to be giving solids. That's just my personal opinion, though. Goat milk/cheese is tolerated by some MSPI babies.

@camedowncrushing I usually make my own steel cut oats (I soak them overnight so they cook quicker in the morning) that I buy in bulk. I've also purchased some quick-cooking gluten-free oats that come in single packs. I think the brand is Glutenfreeda?

I ladies! I am a FTM, my LO is 4months old and showing signs of what I think are food allergies/intolerance. She is EBF. I usually post on my BM board but I was hoping you could provide me with more insight.
LOs main symptom is dark green diapers that are VERY watery (they soak through like urine). The only "solid" part of the diaper is a lot of mucous.
She has very painful gas in the evening times and when she does poop she really works at getting it out. She had some mild exema flare up but I have cleared that for the most part.
I am very lactose intollarant so LO has only been introduced to dairy in trace amounts though I have now cut that from my diet also.
I have cut soy from my diet and three days later she had the first normal diaper in over a month. But went right back to watery green slime the next day. I have read that a relapse can occurr. I accidentally ate soy the other night and she has a HORRIBLE night.
My question is does this sound like a soy intolerance to you? Also LO can not handle wheat bread, it gives her horrible gas so I have always eaten white bread. Should I eliminate gluten to see if that is also a cause??
Thank you ladies, I'm sorry this post is so long I'm just not sure what to do to help my LO !

    ETA
I also just realized we started giving mothers bliss colic calm around the time of really watery diapers. Could this be partly to blame???
  • @Izzies Hi and welcome! Have you cut all dairy and soy from your diet, even hidden? It does sound like MSPI to me. You could also try cutting out all wheat, even hidden (but not necessarily all gluten), and see if that helps too. I'm not sure what's in the colic calm, does it have a list of ingredients
  • @rockandrollfriend thank you for your response. I have cut all dairy and soy including hidden but have had a few slip ups. I was doing some hidden dairy (my coffee creamer has a milk derivative in it) but cut that today. I went through my pantry and realized there was hidden soy in so many things! Like the bread I had been eating etc. I'm headed to the grocery store tomorrow to try and stock up on safe items.
The colic calm ingredient list is: organic ginger extract , organic fennel extract, deionized water, vegetable glycerine, fructose, sodium bicarbonate, citrus bioflavonoid extract, citric acid, potassium sorbate, natural fennel flavor
Thank you for any advice /guidance/ etc !! I don't eat many packaged foods because of my dairy issues but cutting soy has slashed a lot out of my diet! I'm happy though to at least have a idea about what's going on with my poor LO.
    Thanks again!
