~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check In~*~* 1/27

Hi all. I am Bumping from my phone today so let's just do a general check in. How are you and LO doing? Any updates to share or burning questions?

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check In~*~* 1/27

  • DS has an ear infection so I'm home with him. He hardly slept last night so we're both exhausted. MSPI wise, we're fine, though I had wanted to try soy again and that's been pushed back by these illnesses.

  • Rocknrollfriend I hope your DS gets better soon and that you both get some sleep!

We are ok. DS is still doing well with melted cheese and he just tried yogurt today. I feel bloated from eating milk products now- I told DH that after this dairy honeymoon I'm going to really limit the milk products to a minimum bc I just feel better generally without them.

We aren't going to try soy for quite some time but will try eggs and shellfish again with DS at some point. I have a particularly bad feeling about eggs.

  • LO and I were making major strides two weeks into our elimination diet until yesterday... She now has a rash, started spitting up again, sounds very congested, and her tummy is bloated. Stool is still normal and she is feeding well though. The only thing I can think of is that my husband accidentally put butter on my food Sunday but that still doesn't explain the rash that appeared Saturday. It starts clearing up then reappears after every feeding. I am so frustrated that I can't figure out what caused this setback ;(
  • We're doing better. I found a couple of things I'd been eating had dairy and/or soy in them, and since I've cut those out I'm starting to see improvement in our last bit of symptoms (hooray!).

We had a big family gathering to celebrate January birthdays (there are five of them) at my mom's house over the weekend, and this time my mom took over most of the cooking. It was awesome, because there were only a few things I couldn't eat. I pigged out on food that was amazing and safe for DS and I. I guess that's one of the 'nice' things about my mom having some of the same sensitivities and food allergies--she gets it, and there's a lot to be said for that.

I'm struggling a lot, though, in getting other people to understand. FIL has tried to feed DS ice cream twice, even though he's not old enough for any kind of food in the first place, PLUS the MSPI... Both times when I stopped him, he's tried to tell me it'll be fine, DS isn't really allergic to anything. Not in a mean way, and not really argumentative, either. You can just tell he doesn't understand.

And in that same vein, I've had some really frustrating conversations with MIL about it, too. Some gems from conversations over the last week:
"Do you think he's got this because you were vaccinated as a child? Or do you think it's from having him vaccinated maybe?"
"Well, how do you know it's milk and soy? My babies were always fussy when I ate a lot of salt. Or too many vegetables. He's probably just got colic."

Is it bad that I want to sit my entire extended family down and have some kind of MSPI class? Like, with guest speakers and cheesy informational videos? I just really want them to understand that this is real, and I'm not just making it up to be difficult, which seems to be the impression my in-laws (and some of my own extended family) have.

  • @lovelainie that's frustrating! My family hasn't been that bad, but they do continue to make foods for get-togethers and tell me "it's ok it only has a little bit of butter in it".

We are doing ok here. I feel like we're stuck waiting for this cold to clear up- LO has been congested since the first of the year. She's swallowing so much mucous that when it shows up in her diapers it's hard to tell if it's from her cold or what I'm eating. So in the meantime I've eliminated tree nuts and peanuts this week on top of the dairy and soy to see if at least the stool color returns to normal. That leaves only eggs and wheat from the top 8 (I already don't eat seafood), which I'm holding out on until last because I eat them the most!

It's hard to believe I've been on the restricted diet for 9 weeks and we're still having problems. But she's had 2 distinct periods of normal stools that then returned to green mucous with no changes in my diet, so I'm pretty sure we're still missing something.

  • We are still doing really well over here. It's probably been since right after new year's since he's had any blood in his diaper, and his stool is back to "normal," also. It's such a relief after we had so many problems figuring out the dairy-free thing.

  • @lovelainie I also have a lot of problems with my in laws(on the mspi understanding/caring and otherwise). I finally gave up trying and just made sure they were/are never alone with DS. (When DS was much younger FIL said he would just give DS formula when I wasn't around). DS is now 2 years old and they have only watched him twice when we were really in a bind. When they visit we make sure DH or I feed DS. So you could try to sit them down if you think it would help, but for me FIL doesn't even WANT to understand so he doesn't even listen. Good luck, I know it is really hard as it is to have an mspi child let alone deal with family conflict around it.

Is there anything new you've started eating, or a vitamin or some other medication or supplement you started taking, or giving LO? Since it is only 2 weeks into the diet, it is also possible that the proteins are still working their way out of your systems. A lot of mamas have reported an intial improvement in symptoms, and then sort of a relapse, before their LO gets completely better. I know it is frustrating, but hang in there! Let us know if there's anything we can help you with.

That is hard when mucous is getting into the stool from being sick. DS has had some gross poops with this cold, reminded me of back when we were still figuring out what to eliminate from my diet. If I were you, I would wait until your LO's cold clears up to try eliminating other foods. Hope she gets well soon!
  • @lovelainie I'm glad your LO is doing better, and that your mom is so supportive! I totally understand the frustration with your ILs. Some people really just don't get it. My FIL tried to give DS bread on multiple occassions when we weren't eating wheat. We kept explaining that he couldn't have it, but he kept on saying it would be good for him to eat more foods... ugh. Like brideinsummer, I ended up just watching him like a hawk when we were at family gatherings with food, and basically put the "don't feed my kid!" vibe out there. I did my best to explain the situation, and tried to just let the weird comments (similar to your MILs) roll off my back. I know it's annoying! One of the many joys of this whole MSPI thing. I try to remember that it's only temporary. And if you create some educational videos, pass them along! :)
  • @lovelaine I had problems with my in-laws with DD1.  She has outgrown her MSPI, but they still want to give her things I am not comfortable with...like lobster.  It is super annoying.

amichelle723  I am having the same problem...we will go days with "good looking" poop, and then I am back to green mucousy poop.  I have been wondering if I am having foremilk/hindmilk imbalance as well.

I have an appt on Thursday with the pedi, and I am hoping our cards come back clean.  I haven't seen any blood all week which makes me happy!

DH has been great this time around.  With DD1 I think he felt guilty about me having to be on a restricted diet he kept asking me to see if she had outgrown it...I never tried until she was 8 months, and she didn't outgrow it until 10 months.  This time he is just supportive.  He went to chipolte twice for me last week which was awesome.
  • @beckyj2013 Welcome!  Have you been on the Food Allergy board as well? I know those ladies have a lot of experience to share, and you might find more advice about the special formulas there. That must have been so scary the first time you gave him formula!

Looks like we have a lot of wheat-free MSPI mamas! In the last thread I shared some wheat-free MSPI-friendly recipes: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/comment/79508999#Comment_79508999

I was/am also egg-free as well, so I can share some more recipes if you'd like.

I was planning to wean ds from bm and put him on neocate fulltime but....that has been put on hold for a variety of reasons, including ds objecting to not nursing.

Last night ds's cheeks were clear prior to supper and when I went to work at 6pm.  When I returned home, his cheeks were bright red.  We fed him squash and chicken for supper.  So I told Dh that we should hold off giving him either of those for a short bit and then give him just one at a time again to see if he gets red cheeks again.  He has had both before but last night was the first time I had noted that he was clear before and red after.....it could also be a coincidence too.

  • Hi everyone! New to this board following LOs appointment with GI doc this morning... I'm a mother of 2 MSPI kids - DS is almost 4 and DD is 8 weeks... Here is some info and a question at the end :)
    1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?
I'm hungry and miss cheese - the fake cheese I just can't handle. Hoping that MSPI diet helps LO and we can avoid medication but will find out next week..

    2. Does your LO have any other issues aside from MSPI?

Only issue for DD is MSPI/Reflux thankfully! With DS we had multiple issues related to him being a preemie...

    3. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?
Does anyone have recipes for MSPI that they would like to share that are tested and yummy? I doing weight watchers to help lose the last 15lbs and finding MSPI recipes that I can do for WW is proving more difficult than just dairy free...

Thanks for reading and here is a cute pic of DD :)

  • @stacers33 Welcome! Your DD is very cute. :) We often share MSPI-friendly recipes in this check-in, all of which are archived at mspimoms.blogspot.com. I don't think we've ever done it from the WW angle, but I hope that helps!
  • I've been lurking for awhile.  My son is 5 months.  Since about 2 months green mucus diapers off and on.  I've cut out dairy and am now working on hidden soy too.  We had a diaper tested yesterday and no blood.  So relieved about that.  Every time I think the diapers are getting better, he has another not so good one.  I'm frustrated that I haven't seen more of an improvement.  I miss dairy so much.  I don't think I've been strict enough about quizzing the restaurant staff when we eat out.  Or there could be something else in my diet he's reacting too.

I'm always struggling with what to make for dinner since so many of my tried and true recipes have cheese in them.  Here's one I made recently that was delicious:
The store was out of brussel sprouts so I substituted broccoli.  My salmon must have been a lot thicker than theirs as it took at least twice as long to cook.
  • Here is a recipe I made that was yummy :) Thought I would share since it was dairy, soy and gluten free! https://mamamomtourage.com/2014/01/08/workout-wednesday-and-paleo-recipes/

  • @CaiShov It usually takes about 3 to 5 weeks for the dairy/soy proteins to work their way out of both your systems. During this elimination period, it's common to see a back and forth with the symptoms - things will start to look better for a few days, then not so good, etc. Once you are symptom free for a week or so, and you slip up somewhere, the reaction time seems to vary among LOs. Some mamas don't see anything for a day or two, while some see a reaction within hours. Are you avoiding all dairy and soy, even hidden?

Here's a good list of ingredients to watch out for with hidden dairy: https://www.godairyfree.org/dairy-free-grocery-shopping-guide/dairy-ingredient-list-2

    And hidden soy: https://www.eatingwithfoodallergies.com/soyallergy.html

@frugalphillybride It took me a long time to figure out everything my DS was reacting to, so I totally understand your frustation. It helped me a lot to keep a food diary so I could look at what I'd eaten whenever he had a reaction. I used the MyFitnessPal app on my phone (I liked that one because it had a huge database of brands and you could scan the barcode on items that weren't already in the database, so you had a record of exactly what you'd eaten). Hang in there!

  • Whoops! I got careless and must have eaten some dairy on Wednesday! Had a little bit of blood and a little bit of fussiness on Thursday. Thankfully it was really minor (compared to previous experiences) and seems to have passed quickly.

That was my experience later on whenever I messed up too - it was minor and passed quickly. Glad he's feeling better.
  • @CaiShov I have read that about the beef but it wasn't personally my experience. The common advice is to start working your way through the Top 8 allergens. Our progression was dairy then soy (on pedi's advice), then eggs and peanuts (my choice, because I was eating a lot of both those things), then wheat (on pedi GE's advice). I also ended up cutting out coconut and cabbage because he had obvious reactions after I ate those foods. I would say yes, if he's still having symptoms in a few weeks of being completely dairy and soy free you would move on to one of the other Top 8 allergens. Some mamas go on a total elimination diet and then introduce foods back into their diet one at a time, but that is super hard and I would reserve that tactic to a baby that is really miserable and just needs some immediate relief. GL!
  • @CaiShov Our allergist and LC said no beef. Their philosophy was if you can have the milk from the cow then you can't have the cow.
