S/O to name saving

Did you decide against a name to avoid "You stole my baby name" drama with friends or family.   In a way we did.    I've always liked the name Alex ever since Family Ties was on the air(I was in LOVE with Alex P Keaton)

A good friend of mine, before she was even PG with #1, told me she loved the name Alexandra and her first daughter would be named that and called Alex.  And if she didn't have a girl, she would just go with Alexander She's been planning on using that name since she was a kid.   Her first was a girl but they went with a different name for several reasons that are too complicated to go into here.

Then I got PG.  Now, she's the type who would throw a hissy fit if we used "her" name.    As it worked out, we really didn't like how Alex sounded with our last name and never could agree on a middle name that worked with it so we decided against it.   Side bonus...we avoided her name drama.

Re: S/O to name saving

  • I always wanted to name DS after my dad. It was always my idea but my sister heard my idea and decided she want to do that too. So luckily I got pregnant first and it was a boy and I named him it. It was my idea first so I really didnt steal it from her and she had nothing to say about it. But I would never not name my child somthing I wanted for the reason someone else wanted/had that name

  • Well dh and I liked the name Megan, but it's his sister's name and we didn't want her (or anyone else, like his other sister) to think we were naming the baby after her so we nixed it off of our list.?

But we had a boy anyhow.?

  • i love the name Zachary and that would have been at the top of my list but my bf had a son first and named him that - so we didn't.  Not a big deal though
  • i don't mention names to my SIL, she is a name stealer.  when i mentioned names years ago when she was pregnant the first time, she didn't forget them. one of them was ryan for a boy.

when i was pregnant with my daughter, she asked me if i had any names picked out, and i told her we had a couple in mind, but didn't want to reveal yet. she said oh, if i remember you liked ryan and emily.  i like ryan for a girl....(yeah, she was pregnant at the same time.) but i was due first, but had a girl anyway.  she ended up with a boy. so we didn't have to worry about it.  and after 4 kids, i think they are finally done, so my names should be safe!

  • I don't understand name stealing. All the names are already out there. They're printed in books even. Unless you're making up some crazya$$ name, no one is stealing your creation.

My dad's two sisters both named their first sons John. There was no catfight screaming match. They both still talk. The boys are best friends.
