Breastfeeding

Those who use playtex drop-ins...

really random, but wonder these things now that baby should be here ANY TIME!!!

i was thinking about when if bf works out and i am able to pump into bottles eventually...i know you have to keep the milk cold...so if you pump into a drop in and take it out somewhere in a cooler bag to run errands or something...how do you heat it up if the baby gets hungry while you are out?? you really shouldnt give a baby a cold bottle...i wonder these things at 2 am when i cant sleep!!!

Re: Those who use playtex drop-ins...

  • according to  the breastfeeding info guide that came w my medela pump. freshly expressed bm is good for four hours. so for errands i do not use the cooler bagv. for longer trips we use the cooler bag and just take the bottle out a couple hrs before we use it so its not cold or we use the bottle warmer that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

    congrats!

  • If you're the one carrying him when you're out and about, milk comes pre-warmed in your breasts ;)  I save the pumped milk for my daycare stash, or for daddy to feed, or for when I want to have a drink without worrying about drunk baby.
  • There's nothing wrong with giving a cold bottle. Some babies prefer warm bottles, but there is no medical reason why you can't just give the milk cold.

My daughter preferred warm milk, so if I needed to feed expressed milk when we were out, I just asked for a cup of hot water (like for tea) and put the bottle in there for a bit.

But most of the time, I did like the pp said and just nursed. You have to pump when you give a bottle anyway (to relieve engorgement and keep your supply up), and it's way easier to find a place to nurse in public vs. pump in public!

  • i most likely would time the errands to go out right after a feeding.  or nurse in the car, dressing room, BRU, etc....otherwise if u need to heat it up. bring a thermos of hot water and a mug and warm the bottle in the mug.  dropin warm up really quick.

i would only need to bring a bottle when DD was less than 6 weeks old b/c she nursed for like 45 min at a time, later when she was older its more like 10 min (including burping)

  • I have always fed dd before we go out and usually am back home before she needed to eat.  If she did I just BFed her.

If I did bring a bottle, I'd use hot water and warm it up.  If you're at a restaurant or food court at the mall, etc just ask for a cup of hot water and sit it in it.

  • I've given DD a cold bottle.

If you are in a restaurant you can ask for a mug of hot water and warm it up that way.

  • If I had plans to run errands, I would take freshly pumped milk with me (it's good for 4 hours at room temp).  My diaper bag even has an insulated compartment which is nice.  DS usually nurses off one side per session, so I just pump on the un-nursed side after he eats.

  • I just heat it up in a bowl of warm water. On my BM storage bags, the directions say BM is good at room temp for 10 hours, but the temp has to be between 66-72 I believe. I always hear something a little different, but I never leave it out that long.
