Anyone deliver at Mt Auburn?

We're moving down to arlington next week (from NH) and I've set up some appts with their obstetricians... anyone have any experiences they can share about this place? I'm a little nervous switching states/drs/hospitals so late in the game. How were the drs? nurses? lactation consultants? your room? was there a place for dh to stay? did you room-in? thanks!

Re: Anyone deliver at Mt Auburn?

  • I had my first at Mount Auburn and most of my friends have delivered there.  It's a great hospital.  Everyone was great.  Husband can stay in room, in a chair that turns into a bed.

  • I delivered at Mt. Auburn and had a great experience all around.  The nurses were all wonderful in both L and D, PP and in the nursery.  I only remember there being one LC who's manner was very take charge, but she was very nice and easy to talk to.  The rooms are nice, very clean and there are 18 private rooms (I think) and 2 double rooms which are used as a last resort.  DH did stay in the room in the chair that folds out and I think they encourage you to keep the baby with you at night (but were also great about taking him so I could get sleep).

DS also had jaundice and had to be readmitted and they let me stay in the hospital for an additional 2 nights so I could continue BF.  As a result, I was placed in a double  room with another woman in the same situation.  Obviously a private room would have been preferable, but the fact that they even let me do this was great in itself.  Definitely check into getting a tour, and I remember while I was there, they were a doing a tour with siblings (I think in conjuction with a class to prepare siblings).

As far as the doctors go, I had Dr. D'avenas who came highly recommended by other nesties on this board.  She's with Fresh Pond Women's Health (very close to Arlington) and I really liked her.She didn't end up delivering DS, but the doctor I did have was great too.  On a side note, I thought the food at the hospital was pretty good too!  All in all, I had a great experience, so I wouldn't worry too much!

I also happen to live in Arlington, so if you have any questions about the area, Dr. D'avenas or even possible pediatricians feel free to page me.

  • My OBGYN is Dawn Anderson and she is located at 22 Mill Street in Arlington.  She is wonderful and I highly recommend her.
  • Another recommendation for Dr. D'Avenas' practice here... I delivered my second at Mt. Auburn last September, and I loved everything about my experience there... the nurses, anesthesia, and the on-call doc who delivered Sylvie were all fantastic. In comparison to my first delivery at Melrose-Wakefield (where the care was fine), I would pick Mt. Auburn again hands down.

(I'm in Arlington as well, so if you are looking for pedi recs or anything like that, I can help out.)

  • I just re-read your post, and I prob. should've answered some of your specific questions. :)

The doc who delivered Sylvie was Dr. Leslie Macdonald, and she was awesome. I'd honestly suggest checking her out as well as Dr. D'Avenas. Nurses were great... very on top of everything and great patient advocates (way more so than at Melrose-Wakefield, where I felt like some of the nurses had "agendas" they were trying to push on us... ) I didn't really utilize the Lactation services because DD#2 just took to nursing very easily, but I had been in touch with the lactation office, since DD#1 had a very tough time establishing nursing. Room was beautiful, overlooking the Charles and the Boston skyline... DH had a recliner that folded out to sleep on... not the best, but it did the trick. He actually went home after the first night, since it was so easy to get back and forth from Arlington.

  • Leslie MacDonald was my OB and I think she is a genius.  DH & I both really love her.  Her practice is Mt. Auburn Practice for Women located on Mt. Auburn Street in Watertown.  She didn't deliver either of my babies though.  Dr. D'Avenas delivered my first and she was absolutely fabulous.  Dr. Chow delivered my 2nd and she was really nice too.  I don't really remember seeing much of the Dr.s while I was in labor...they kind of rushed in at the 11th hour when I was ready to push.  The L&D nurses are the ones who are with you for the majority of it and they are awesome at Mt Auburn Hospital.  The rooms are nice & food is decent (for hospital food anyway!).  Good luck!
