STTNers, how do you get the 5th feeding in??

I am having a major feeding schedule dilemma with DD. She eats 6 ounces every 31/2-4 hours. She wakes to eat around 7:30 and goes to bed around 7:30-8. She has no problem sleeping through the night IF she has 5 feedings in. She doesnt eat all 6 ounces at every feeding, but most of it. The problem is, with eating every 31/2-4 hours, you only get 4 feedings and that doesnt seem enough for a 3 month old.

Ive tried to give her less more frequently and that wont cut it for her, because she takes decent naps during the day and i dont wake to feed her. any suggestions? we also tried to dream feed, but that didnt work for us.

can you guys give me examples of your feeding schedules?

  • I would try a dream feed at around 11 or midnight or so.  That might help.  Also, our pediatrician said that during the daytime that we SHOULD wake him if he goes longer than 4 or 5 hours with a feeding and to save the letting him sleep part for night time.  He said it also will help them distinguish night and day.

  • We're not on a schedule.  I feed her when she's hungry and she's been sttn since 6 weeks.

  • DS wakes between 7:30-8:00. He takes about 5.5-6 ounces every 3 hours or so. He doesn't take long naps during the day, so he doesn't miss a feeding. His last feeding is usually around 8:30, and then we put him down for the night. Recently he's been taking more ounces in that first bottle of the day, like he's making up for that feeding he missed while he slept. I normally say don't wake a sleeping baby, but it sounds like you've tried everything else. Maybe try waking her up during one of her afternoon naps for another feeding.
  • As long as he's gaining weight at a rate your pedi is happy with I think it's fine.   Those are pretty big bottles for a 2 month old, so maybe your baby is making up for it in quantity?  I've always heard that they are supposed to eat 2 ounces plus one for every month of age.  SO your baby is 2.5 months old so should be eating 4.5 ounces.

  • My baby is not on a schedule. We still feed on demand and I'm BF so the quantity is never the same. Some times he feeds for a long time and other times just for a few minutes. His last feed is usually between 8-9pm and then he'll sleep until around 5am, wake up feed and go back to sleep until around 8 or 9am. During the day he still feeds about every 2-4 hours. He generally doesn't take really long naps though. He's been SSTN since about 4-6 weeks.
  • I agree with PP... maybe she is making up for it in quantity.  DD just now started to have 6oz. bottles and she's 4 months.

  • DS was eats 6 oz bottles every 4 hrs at 3 months - I think it has more to do with size than age. I am pretty sure that if I could sneak in a 5th feeding he'd STTN, but I haven't bothered because it would mess up the routine he has going. I'm just assuming that as he gets bigger and starts eating more he'll slowly drop the 5th (overnight) feeding and just need the 4 daytime ones.
